Chapter 7

I read the message until the words blurred.
RACHEL WAS HIDING.
I had known Rachel for six years.
Dated her for three.
Married her for three.
Held her hand while she died.
She had never told me she was hiding from anyone.
At least I didn't think she had.
Detective Harris immediately contacted authorities near David's home.
For twenty-three minutes, nobody could reach him.
Then local police arrived.
David was alive.
Someone had thrown a brick through his back window and fled.
No one entered the house.
No one was found.
Harris put him on a secure video call.
David looked older than I remembered.
His hair had more gray.
His face was pale.
He stared at Lily when she passed behind me.
Then his eyes filled.
“She looks exactly like Rachel.”
I didn't have patience for memories.
“What did you mean?”
David rubbed his face.
“My father hired Marcus Cole almost ten years ago.”
“Why?”
“To find Rachel.”
“She wasn't missing.”
“To us, she was.”
I stared at him.
“You knew where she lived.”
“Later.”
“Explain.”
David took a breath.
“Our father wasn't a good man.”
I remembered Richard Palmer differently.
Strict.
Wealthy.
Cold.
But generous to Lily.
He had paid for part of Rachel's treatment.
He cried at her funeral.
“What did he do?”
David looked away.
“He controlled everything.”
“Money?”
“Money. Relationships. Jobs. Where we lived. Who we dated.”
“Rachel never told me that.”
“She didn't want you involved.”
“Involved in what?”
“When she was twenty-two, she discovered Dad had been moving money through accounts in her name.”
Harris leaned closer.
“What kind of money?”
“Business funds. Tax fraud. Maybe worse. I never knew everything.”
“What did Rachel do?”
“She confronted him.”
“And?”
“He threatened her.”
My skin went cold.
“She left?”
“She disappeared for almost a year.”
This was before I met her.
I remembered Rachel telling me she had spent a year “finding herself.”
I thought that meant travel.
Freedom.
Not running.
David continued.
“Dad hired Cole to locate her.”
“And he did?”
“Yes.”
“Then what?”
“Rachel made a deal with Dad. She came back to the family. He stopped using her identity. She promised not to go to authorities.”
I felt sick.
“Why would she agree?”
“Because Dad threatened me.”
David's voice cracked.
“He said if Rachel destroyed him, he'd make sure I went down too.”
Harris asked, “Was David involved?”
“No.”
I stared at him.
“How does Vanessa know any of this?”
“I don't know.”
“You told her?”
“Never.”
“Then why would she put a note in Lily's toy telling me to call you?”
David shook his head.
“I have no idea.”
Then Lily walked into the room.
She was holding a juice box.
David smiled weakly.
“Hi, Lily.”
She hid behind me.
“Who is that?”
“Your Uncle David.”
She peeked around my arm.
“My mommy's brother?”
My chest tightened.
“Yes.”
She waved.
David looked like someone had punched him.
After Lily left, he whispered, “Michael, there's something else you need to know about the trust.”
I already hated those words.
“What?”
“When Dad died, Lily inherited more than you know.”
“I know about the three million.”
David shook his head.
“That's the formal trust.”
I frowned.
“There was another account.”
“How much?”
“I don't know exactly.”
“David.”
“Maybe eight million.”
Nobody spoke.
My father sat down slowly.
I stared at the screen.
“Eight?”
“Dad moved assets before he died. Rachel had been designated beneficiary on some accounts. After her death, those rights passed to Lily.”
“Why wasn't I told?”
“Because ownership was disputed.”
“By who?”
“Business partners. Creditors. The estate.”
“And now?”
David swallowed.
“The dispute ended three months ago.”
Three months.
The same period Vanessa's calls with Ethan exploded.
The same period the payments to Cole increased.
“How much did Lily inherit?”
David looked miserable.
“Eleven point four million dollars.”
The room went completely silent.
I felt like I couldn't understand numbers anymore.
“Eleven million?”
“Yes.”
“Who knew?”
“The lawyers. Me. A few estate administrators.”
“And Vanessa?”
“I never told her.”
“But she found out.”
“Apparently.”
Harris asked, “Who controls the funds?”
David answered, “Michael, as Lily's surviving parent, manages them until she reaches the age specified by the trust.”
Rebecca leaned toward the screen.
“And if Michael dies?”
David hesitated.
“His legal spouse becomes interim fiduciary unless a court appoints someone else.”
Vanessa.
There it was again.
Harris stood.
“The motive just got bigger.”
I couldn't sit still.
“So this entire thing was money.”
David looked at me.
“Maybe.”
“Not maybe.”
“Michael, Rachel was terrified of Cole.”
“Rachel is dead.”
“Yes.”
“And Cole spent months photographing my family.”
“Yes.”
“Vanessa tried to frame me.”
“Yes.”
“So tell me what I'm missing.”
David leaned close to the camera.
“Cole never worked for money alone.”
“What does that mean?”
“He collected leverage.”
“Blackmail.”
“Yes.”
The pieces shifted.
Maybe Vanessa hired Cole.
Maybe Cole discovered the inheritance.
Maybe he took control.
Maybe the plan changed.
I thought about the message.
VANESSA WASN'T THE ONE IN CHARGE.
Harris asked, “Could Cole access documents from Richard Palmer's old estate?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“He worked for Dad for years. He knew attorneys, accountants, storage locations.”
“Could he know about Lily's inheritance before Vanessa did?”
David nodded.
“Absolutely.”
Then another thought hit me.
“What happens if Lily dies?”
No one wanted to answer.
Rebecca finally did.
“Michael.”
“Answer.”
“Depending on the trust language, remaining assets may revert to designated secondary beneficiaries.”
“Who?”
David went pale.
I looked at him.
“Who, David?”
He whispered, “Me.”
The room changed.
My father stood.
“You?”
David lifted both hands.
“I didn't know about any plan.”
Harris's expression hardened.
“Mr. Palmer, don't leave your residence.”
David stared at him.
“You think I'm involved?”
“We verify everyone.”
“Someone just attacked my house.”
“That doesn't clear you.”
I wanted to defend David.
But twenty-four hours earlier, I would have defended Vanessa too.
I trusted no one now.
Not completely.
Harris arranged for Oregon police to preserve David's communications and computers voluntarily.
David agreed.
Before ending the call, he looked at me.
“Michael.”
“What?”
“Rachel left something.”
My breath caught.
“What?”
“A letter.”
“To me?”
“To Lily.”
I couldn't move.
“She wrote it during treatment. She made me promise to give it to Lily when she turned eighteen.”
My eyes burned.
“Why are you telling me now?”
“Because part of it is about my father.”
“And Cole?”
“Yes.”
My skin prickled.
“Read it.”
“I don't have it here.”
“Where?”
“A safe-deposit box.”
“Can police access it?”
“With my permission.”
“Give it.”
David nodded.
“I will.”
The next morning was the emergency court hearing.
I hadn't slept.
Rebecca met me outside the courtroom.
“You cannot lose your temper.”
“I know.”
“Vanessa will appear by video.”
That surprised me.
“She hasn't been released?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“Michael.”
“I know. Don't react.”
Inside, the judge reviewed the accusations.
Vanessa's attorney argued that I admitted assaulting her.
He showed the photograph of her cheek.
He described my “history of anger.”
He presented selected messages.
Then Rebecca stood.
She didn't raise her voice.
She presented the police incident report.
The forged guardianship documents.
Photographs of the basement closet.
The medicine bottle.
The discovered suitcases.
The secret phones.
The twenty-five thousand dollars paid to Marcus Cole.
Then came Aiden's recorded forensic interview.
The judge's face changed.
Vanessa appeared on the screen from the detention center.
For the first time since all this began, she looked small.
Her attorney leaned over to speak to her.
Rebecca continued.
“Your Honor, we also have video evidence showing Mrs. Carter coercing a four-year-old child to falsely accuse her father of abuse.”
Vanessa suddenly shouted.
“No!”
Everyone turned.
Her attorney grabbed his microphone.
“Vanessa, stop.”
She didn't.
“Cole told me it was just for leverage!”
The courtroom went dead silent.
Her lawyer closed his eyes.
Rebecca slowly turned.
The judge stared at Vanessa.
“What did you say?”
Vanessa realized what she had done.
Her mouth closed.
Her attorney whispered urgently.
But it was too late.
The judge said, “Mrs. Carter, you are represented by counsel. I strongly suggest you listen to him.”
Vanessa began crying.
The hearing ended quickly after that.
My access to Lily remained unrestricted.
My parents were allowed to continue helping with supervision while the domestic assault charge was addressed separately.
Vanessa was barred from contacting Lily.
Regarding Aiden, the court ordered temporary placement with my parents pending investigation of Ethan and Vanessa.
Aiden would remain with us.
When Rebecca told me outside, I nearly collapsed from relief.
Then Harris approached.
“We have a problem.”
Of course.
“What?”
“Cole made contact.”
My heart accelerated.
“With who?”
“Vanessa.”
“How?”
“A message reached her attorney's office.”
“What does it say?”
Harris handed me a copy.
One sentence.
TELL YOUR CLIENT TO REMEMBER WHO BUILT HER STORY.
I looked up.
“He's threatening her.”
“Probably.”
“Can she help find him?”
“We're going to ask.”
Twenty minutes later, Vanessa agreed to speak.
Not because she wanted to help me.
Because she was terrified.
We met in a secure interview room.
I watched through glass.
She sat across from Harris wearing jail clothing.
No makeup.
No perfect hair.
No control.
Harris placed the message in front of her.
“Where is Marcus Cole?”
“I don't know.”
“You paid him.”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
She looked down.
“At first? To investigate Michael.”
“Why?”
“I thought he was cheating.”
I almost laughed from the observation room.
Of all the lies, that one sounded almost normal.
Harris waited.
Vanessa continued.
“Cole discovered the trust.”
“Lily's inheritance?”
She nodded.
“He said Michael would eventually leave me.”
“Why?”
“He said men with money always upgrade.”
Harris didn't react.
“So you decided to steal it?”
“No.”
“Then explain.”
Vanessa wiped tears from her face.
“I wanted security.”
“By fabricating abuse?”
“That wasn't the original plan.”
“What was?”
“Michael would sign updated financial documents. I would get access to accounts. Ethan would take Aiden for a while. Carol would take Lily.”
“And you?”
“I was leaving.”
“With Ethan?”
She shook her head.
That surprised everyone.
“No.”
“Then who?”
“Nobody.”
“What about the messages between you and Ethan?”
“I told him we were getting back together so he'd cooperate.”
I stared through the glass.
She had manipulated everyone.
Harris asked, “What was Cole's role?”
“He arranged documents.”
“Forgery?”
“Yes.”
“Surveillance?”
“Yes.”
“Drugging Lily?”
Vanessa started crying.
“I did that.”
My fists clenched.
“Why?”
“She would tell Michael everything on video calls.”
Harris's voice hardened.
“So you sedated her.”
“Only a little.”
I had to leave the observation room for thirty seconds.
Rebecca followed me.
“Don't go in there.”
“I won't.”
When I returned, Vanessa was talking about the photographs.
“Cole said courts needed visible injuries.”
“So you hurt the children?”
“I never meant—”
“Yes or no.”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
Harris continued.
“What changed?”
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Cole found out exactly how much Lily was worth.”
“And?”
“He stopped working for me.”
“What does that mean?”
“He said the plan belonged to him now.”
Harris leaned forward.
“What plan?”
Vanessa whispered, “He said Lily was the asset.”
My stomach twisted.
“What was he going to do with her?”
“I don't know.”
“Vanessa.”
“I swear.”
“What did ‘minor transfer options’ mean?”
She shook her head hard.
“I asked. He wouldn't tell me.”
“Why didn't you go to police?”
“Because he had everything.”
“What?”
“Videos. Emails. Forged papers. Proof I hurt the kids.”
“So you kept helping him.”
“Yes.”
“What was supposed to happen Friday?”
She closed her eyes.
“Michael was supposed to be in Chicago.”
“What happened at 7:30?”
“I was supposed to put something in his whiskey Thursday night before his flight home.”
I stopped breathing.
Harris stared at her.
“What something?”
“Pills.”
“What kind?”
“I don't know.”
“Where are they?”
“In the garage. Red toolbox.”
My father cursed softly beside me.
Harris continued.
“What was supposed to happen to Michael?”
Vanessa started sobbing.
“Cole said he'd sleep through the night.”
“And then?”
“I don't know.”
“Stop saying that.”
“I don't know!”
“Friday schedule says ‘M out.’ What does it mean?”
Vanessa looked directly toward the observation glass.
She couldn't see me.
But it felt like she could.
Then she whispered the answer.
“Michael out of the picture.”
My blood turned cold.
Harris asked, “Dead?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never agreed to that.”
“That wasn't the question.”
“I don't know.”
“What about the children?”
“Cole said he'd handle Lily.”
“How?”
“I don't know.”
“Aiden?”
“Ethan was supposed to take him.”
“And you?”
“I was supposed to disappear.”
“With the money?”
“Yes.”
Harris sat back.
“Where would Cole take Lily?”
Vanessa started shaking.
“I only heard one place.”
“Where?”
“A cabin.”
“What cabin?”
“I don't know.”
“Who owns it?”
“I don't know.”
“Where is it?”
She shook her head.
Then stopped.
Her eyes widened.
“Wait.”
Harris leaned forward.
“What?”
“Rachel.”
My stomach dropped.
May you like
“What about Rachel?”
Vanessa whispered, “Cole called it Rachel's cabin.”
