Chapter 11: The Storage Unit That Disappeared

Michael immediately called the storage facility.

He requested the removal records, access logs, and available security footage.

The manager, a man named Thomas, explained that David had arrived shortly after eight that morning.

He had presented identification, signed the release form, and removed several boxes.

"Did he say where he was taking them?"" Michael asked.

Thomas hesitated.

"He mentioned a family property.""

Grandma looked at me.

"The house.""

I felt my stomach drop.

David had returned to Grandpa's house.

The one that legally belonged to me.

Michael requested that the records be preserved and advised us not to confront David ourselves.

But I couldn't sit still.

"Can we go there?""

He looked at me.

"We can arrange a visit to inspect the property, provided we follow the appropriate procedures.""

Grandma nodded.

"Then let's go.""

Rachel insisted on coming with us.

The drive was quiet.

I kept thinking about the missing boxes.

What had Vanessa stored there?

More financial records?

Documents about my mother's death?

Or something that would finally explain why my grandfather had spent so much time protecting me?

When we reached the house, the garage door was open.

A white delivery van stood beside it.

Two cardboard boxes sat on the driveway.

David was carrying another box toward the garage.

He stopped when he saw us.

"What are you doing here?""

Michael stepped forward.

"We're here to inspect the property and document any items removed from the storage unit.""

David placed the box down.

"You can't just walk into my house.""

Michael calmly produced the property trust documents.

"Actually, this property now belongs to Aaliyah. Your management authority has been suspended pending review.""

David looked at me.

"You're really doing this?""

I stepped forward.

"It's my house.""

He laughed bitterly.

"Your house? You were nine when Robert made those arrangements.""

"And I'm eighteen now.""

"You're not ready to manage a property like this.""

Grandma crossed her arms.

"She doesn't need to manage it alone. She has a lawyer.""

David looked at Michael.

"This is a private family matter.""

Michael replied, "Not when financial records are being removed from a property under investigation.""

David's expression changed.

"I haven't removed anything important.""

Rachel walked toward the van.

"Then why are you taking boxes out of Vanessa's storage unit?""

David turned sharply.

"Rachel, stay out of this.""

She stopped.

"No. I've stayed out of it for years. That's why we're here.""

David shook his head.

"You don't know what you're talking about.""

"I know I signed the first authorization because you told me Robert approved it. I know you used my signature to move money. And I know you never intended to repay it.""

David's face darkened.

"You should be careful.""

Rachel looked him directly in the eye.

"I've been careful for too long.""

Michael instructed the property inspector to photograph the boxes and their contents before anything else was moved.

David protested, but eventually stepped aside.

Inside the garage, we found several cardboard boxes marked with dates.

One contained old business invoices.

Another held photographs.

The third was filled with folders.

I recognized my mother's name on one of them.

OLIVIA — PERSONAL.

My hands went cold.

I reached for it.

David immediately stepped forward.

"Leave that alone.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"It's private.""

"She was my mother.""

He stopped.

I opened the folder.

Inside were bank statements, handwritten notes, and copies of emails.

The first email was from Vanessa to David.

She found the account. We need to move everything before Robert gets involved.

The second was dated two days later.

Olivia keeps asking questions. You need to handle this before she speaks to your father.

I looked at the date.

It was the week before my mother died.

Grandma covered her mouth.

Rachel leaned against the garage wall.

"Good Lord.""

I continued reading.

Another email was dated the day my mother was hospitalized.

I told you to make sure she didn't contact Robert. Now she's threatening to expose everything.

My father stepped toward me.

"That's enough.""

I held the page up.

"Why was Vanessa telling you to stop Mom from contacting Grandpa?""

David stared at the floor.

"Because she was angry.""

"About what?""

"She wanted to leave.""

"That doesn't explain the emails.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Olivia was making accusations. Vanessa was frightened. She thought the business would collapse.""

Grandma's voice shook.

"So you both decided Olivia was the problem?""

David looked at her.

"Mom, you don't understand the pressure we were under.""

"Then explain it!""

He said nothing.

The property inspector photographed the documents and placed the folder in a protective evidence sleeve.

Then Rachel noticed something at the bottom of the box.

A small velvet pouch.

She opened it.

Inside was a gold necklace.

I recognized it immediately.

My mother's necklace.

The one that had disappeared when I was thirteen.

I reached for it.

"Where did this come from?""

Rachel turned it over.

There was a tiny engraving on the clasp.

For Olivia, with all my love. Robert.

Grandma began crying.

"Your grandfather gave her that on her wedding day.""

I held the necklace in my palm.

"Why was it in Vanessa's storage unit?""

David looked away.

Rachel answered.

"Because Vanessa took it.""

I remembered the notebook.

Grandpa had recorded the necklace's disappearance years earlier.

But nobody had ever found it.

I looked at my father.

"You knew where it was.""

He didn't answer.

"All these years, you knew.""

His voice was low.

"Vanessa said she was going to return it.""

I closed my fingers around the necklace.

"She stole something from my mother and you let her keep it.""

David looked exhausted.

"I was trying to avoid another fight.""

I stared at him.

"You keep choosing the easiest thing for yourself.""

Before he could answer, Michael approached us with another document.

"This may be important.""

It was a storage inventory from the original rental agreement.

The contents included financial records, personal correspondence, and an item described as:

*ONE SEALED VIDEO CASSETTE — OLIVIA W.*

I looked at Michael.

"Where is it?""

He checked the inventory.

"It was listed as removed this morning.""

Grandma looked at David.

"Where is the cassette?""

David's face went pale.

"I don't know.""

Rachel shook her head.

"David.""

He looked at her.

"Don't.""

But Rachel continued.

"Vanessa told me about that tape.""

My heart began pounding.

"What tape?""

Rachel swallowed.

"She said Robert had recorded something before he died. Something involving Olivia.""

I looked at my father.

"Where is it?""

He shook his head.

"I told you. I don't know.""

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered without speaking.

Her voice came through loudly.

"David, did you get everything?""

He closed his eyes.

"Not everything.""

"Did you find the tape?""

Grandma looked at me.

David turned away.

Vanessa continued.

"Listen carefully. You cannot let Aaliyah see that recording. If she hears what Olivia said about the night she died, she'll know we lied about everything.""

The call disconnected.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Grandma.

Then at Michael.

And finally at my father.

"What did my mother say on that tape?""

David's face had gone completely white.

May you like

He whispered:

"She told Robert she was afraid of me.""
