Chapter 7: The Brother in the Dark

The photograph remained on the table between them.

Marcus could not stop staring at the sentence.

*You found the wrong brother first.*

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Marcus looked at Detective Bell.

“What does that mean?””

Bell's expression was grim.

“It means someone wants you confused.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That's not enough anymore. Everybody keeps giving me pieces. I want the whole thing.””

Bell opened her mouth.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You knew my mother. You knew the names. You knew about Riverside Security.

You knew about the twins. You knew there was another child.””

His voice cracked.

“You knew my wife was afraid.””

Bell looked down.

“There are things we were wrong about.””

“Then tell me.””

Bell pulled out a chair.

“Sit.””

Marcus remained standing.

“I'm fine.””

“No, you're not.””

He nearly snapped back.

Then Jaylen touched his hand.

Marcus looked down.

His son's eyes were exhausted.

So he sat.

Jaylen sat beside him.

Ruiz remained nearby, arms folded.

Bell opened the oldest file.

“The records we recovered last year showed three births at St. Vincent.””

She laid three photocopies across the table.

“Male. Male. Male.””

Marcus stared.

“Triplets.””

“Yes.””

“Then why were only two listed?””

“Because the third child's record was removed.””

“By Riverside Security?””

“Probably.””

“Probably?””

Bell sighed.

“We have evidence pointing to them. We don't have a signed confession.””

Marcus looked at the names.

Marcus Washington.

Michael Washington.

The third name had been cut away.

“What was his name?””

“We don't know.””

Marcus felt an unexpected anger rise.

“You don't know his name?””

“No.””

“Then how does anybody know he exists?””

“Because somebody kept a medical record.””

Bell produced another document.

It was a pathology report.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

*Child breathing.*

Marcus stared at the words.

“Stillborn?””

Bell shook her head.

“That's what the official record said.””

“He was alive.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at Jaylen.

A terrible thought entered his mind.

“Where was he taken?””

“We don't know.””

“Who took him?””

“We believe a doctor named Elias Voss.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Who is that?””

“A pediatric surgeon contracted by Riverside Security.””

“Where is he?””

Bell slid a photograph across the table.

An elderly man.

White hair.

Thin glasses.

Serious eyes.

“He died seven years ago.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Convenient.””

Bell did not respond.

“There was one survivor connected to him,” she said.

“Who?””

“A nurse.””

“Where is she?””

“Dead.””

Marcus laughed once.

“Of course.””

Bell's eyes hardened.

“We're not hiding anything from you.””

Marcus looked at the files.

“Then why am I finding out all of this now?””

“Because until Denise surfaced, we didn't know what we were looking at.””

Marcus leaned back.

“Denise said she'd protected my identity.””

Bell nodded.

“She did.””

“From who?””

Bell stared at him.

“From your twin.””

Marcus went still.

“Michael?””

“Yes.””

Marcus remembered the video.

Michael survived.

Camille's face.

Her trembling voice.

Her fear.

He looked at Ruiz.

“You told me Cameron wasn't my brother.””

Ruiz nodded.

“Now you're saying Michael is?””

“We believe Michael is your biological twin.””

“And Cameron?””

Bell answered.

“That's the problem.””

She pulled out another file.

Inside was a photograph from decades earlier.

A teenage boy stood outside an apartment building.

He looked almost exactly like Marcus.

Same face.

Same narrow eyes.

Same mouth.

But there was a scar on his right hand.

Marcus stared.

“Cameron.””

Bell shook her head.

“No name on the photograph.””

Marcus looked closer.

The boy was wearing a school jacket.

On the chest was a stitched number.

*317.*

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Bell said, “We don't know.””

Then Carter entered the room.

He was carrying a clear plastic evidence bag.

“There's something you need to see.””

Bell turned.

“What?””

Carter put the bag on the table.

Inside was a small cassette recorder.

Marcus looked at it.

“Where did you get that?””

“Denise's motel room.””

Bell frowned.

“We searched that room.””

“Not well enough.””

Carter pressed play.

A woman's voice came through the tiny speaker.

Denise.

Weak.

Breathing heavily.

If Marcus finds this, he needs to know the truth.

Marcus leaned closer.

The recording continued.

Michael was never the danger.

A pause.

The danger was the child they raised in his place.

Marcus looked at Bell.

“What child?””

The recording continued.

They called him Cameron because they couldn't use Michael's name anymore.

Marcus's skin went cold.

He believed he was Michael.

Jaylen tightened his grip on Marcus's hand.

“But he wasn't?””

The recording went silent for several seconds.

Then Denise whispered:

No.

The tape continued.

He was the third child.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Everything collided.

The photograph.

The scars.

The strange childhood memories.

The voice.

The man at the park.

The brother he'd never known.

The child taken before anyone knew the truth.

Denise's voice returned.

Your mother tried to get him back.

A shaky breath.

That's why they killed her.

Marcus looked at the floor.

“That's a lie.””

No one responded.

“My mother died in 2011.””

Bell nodded.

“That matches.””

“She wasn't killed.””

“We never proved it.””

Marcus stood.

“You told me my mother died of natural causes.””

Bell's eyes met his.

“That was the official record.””

Marcus looked at the recording.

“What else did Denise say?””

Carter stopped the tape.

“There's more.””

“Play it.””

He pressed the button.

Denise's voice filled the room.

Michael knows something is wrong.

He doesn't remember the beginning.

They drugged him.

They made him believe he was another person.

Marcus whispered, “Why?””

Denise answered from the tape.

Because the third child belonged to the program.

Bell's eyes narrowed.

“Program?””

The recording continued.

Riverside wasn't only security.

They ran a private identity operation.

Marcus stared.

“They changed people's identities?””

“That's what she said.””

“Why?””

The tape crackled.

Denise continued.

Money.

Power.

Leverage.

They took children connected to powerful clients and erased their histories.

Marcus felt sick.

“Children?””

“Yes.””

Carter looked at Bell.

“We've never found enough evidence to prove the full network.””

Marcus slammed his hand against the table.

“My son has been watched for years.””

The recording continued.

Camille discovered what they were doing.

Marcus stopped.

“She found them.””

Denise's voice grew weaker.

She tried to expose them.

But someone close to her betrayed her.

Marcus felt a chill.

“Who?””

The tape hissed.

Then Denise spoke one final sentence.

You trusted the wrong woman, Marcus.

The recording ended.

Silence.

Marcus turned slowly toward Ruiz.

She was the only woman in the room.

Her expression changed.

“Marcus…”

He stepped back.

“You were at my house.””

“I was protecting you.””

“You knew about the hidden room.””

“No.””

“You knew about the DNA.””

“We found it after.””

“You knew my wife's name.””

“So did Bell.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Denise said I trusted the wrong woman.””

Ruiz stared at him.

“I'm not that woman.””

“Then who is?””

Bell stepped between them.

“Enough.””

She looked at Ruiz.

“Have you met Camille?””

Ruiz hesitated.

Marcus caught it.

“You have.””

“No.””

“You hesitated.””

“I was trying to remember.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Why would you have met my wife?””

Ruiz looked at Bell.

Bell's face changed.

“Officer Ruiz.””

“I can explain.””

Marcus's voice rose.

“Then explain.””

Ruiz closed her eyes.

“When I was a patrol officer, I responded to a domestic disturbance call.””

“Where?””

She looked at Marcus.

“Your old apartment.””

Marcus felt the air leave the room.

“When?””

“Three years before Camille died.””

“What happened?””

“I found her outside.””

“Was she alone?””

“No.””

Marcus already knew.

“Who was with her?””

Ruiz hesitated.

“A man.””

“What man?””

“I didn't know his name.””

“Describe him.””

“Late thirties. Dark hair. Scar on his hand.””

Marcus's pulse exploded.

“Cameron.””

Ruiz shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“You saw him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Camille begged me not to.””

Marcus stared.

“She knew you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ruiz lowered her voice.

“Because she had already been trying to protect you.””

Marcus felt tears burn his eyes.

“What did she tell you?””

Ruiz looked toward Jaylen.

“She told me if anything happened to her, I was never to let that man get close to your son.””

Marcus's stomach dropped.

“Why?””

“She said he believed Jaylen belonged to him.””

The room fell silent.

Jaylen looked up.

“Me?””

Marcus reached for him.

“Don't listen.””

But Jaylen heard.

Ruiz looked devastated.

“I didn't understand what she meant.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Until now?””

“Yes.””

“And Cameron?””

Ruiz shook her head.

“Camille didn't call him Cameron.””

“Then what did she call him?””

Ruiz looked at Marcus.

“Michael.””

Marcus froze.

“No.””

“She told me his name was Michael.””

“But the man at the park—”

“I don't know who that was.””

Carter suddenly looked at his phone.

His face went pale.

“What?””

He turned the screen around.

A security alert.

Someone had accessed the police database.

Bell moved closer.

“When?””

“Thirty seconds ago.””

“What did they access?””

Carter swallowed.

“Marcus Washington.””

Marcus stared.

“What did they change?””

Carter looked directly at him.

“Your birth record.””

Bell grabbed the phone.

A second alert appeared.

*RECORD DELETION IN PROGRESS.*

Marcus stood.

“Can you stop it?””

Carter was already moving.

“I'm trying.””

The screen flashed.

Then the record disappeared.

A new file appeared in its place.

Marcus Washington.

Date of birth.

1986.

Mother: Evelyn Washington.

Father: Unknown.

Sibling: None.

Marcus stared.

“They're erasing me.””

Bell shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at the screen.

“They're replacing you.””

Another notification appeared.

A new identity record.

Same birth date.

Same hospital.

Different photograph.

Marcus looked at the face.

It was his face.

But beneath the photograph was one name.

*MICHAEL WASHINGTON.*

Jaylen whispered, “Dad.””

Marcus couldn't speak.

Then Carter's phone rang.

He answered.

“Carter.””

His expression changed instantly.

“What?””

Everyone watched him.

“Repeat that.””

A pause.

He looked at Marcus.

“The hospital just called.””

Marcus's voice was barely audible.

“Which hospital?””

Carter swallowed.

“St. Vincent.””

“Why?””

“Because somebody just checked into the emergency room.””

“Who?””

Carter's face had gone white.

“Michael Washington.””

Marcus took a step backward.

Then another.

Carter continued.

“He says he has information about Jaylen.””

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“And he wants to see you alone.””

A message arrived on Marcus's phone at that exact moment.

May you like

One sentence.

*Come alone, or the third child dies tonight.*
