Chapter 7: The Beginning of a Beautiful Lie
Emily always thought the past was the one place Ryan could never change.
Memories belonged to her.
The first time they met.
The first conversation.
The first moment she believed she had found someone different.
Those moments were hers.
Or at least, that was what she had believed.
Until Ryan sent the message.
*You don’t know the beginning.*
The words stayed in her mind all night.
She tried to ignore them.
She tried to convince herself it was another manipulation tactic.
Another attempt to make her doubt herself.
But something about it felt different.
Ryan wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t threatening.
He was confident.
And confidence meant he believed he had something she didn’t know.
The next morning, Emily found herself standing in front of the old wedding photo again.
She stared at the younger version of herself.
The woman smiling beside Ryan.
The woman who believed she had found safety.
“Was any of it real?””
The question escaped before she realized she had spoken aloud.
Arthur, sitting nearby with his morning coffee, looked up.
“Emily.””
She turned.
“He said I don’t know the beginning.””
Arthur’s expression changed.
“What exactly did he say?””
She showed him the message.
He read it carefully.
Then handed the phone back.
“Ryan wants you to chase the answer.””
“But what if there is one?””
Arthur was quiet.
That was the problem.
Because even if Ryan was manipulating her, there was still a possibility that he was using a truth to do it.
And sometimes the most dangerous lies were built around pieces of reality.
Later that day, Laura Mitchell arrived with new information.
But she wasn’t alone.
She brought a private investigator.
“This is Michael Hayes,” Laura explained.
Emily shook his hand.
Michael was calm and professional.
“I’ve been reviewing the financial records.””
Emily sat down.
“What did you find?””
Michael opened his folder.
“Something interesting.””
Arthur leaned forward.
“We’re listening.””
Michael placed several pages on the table.
“Ryan and Daniel were connected longer than we originally thought.””
Emily looked at the documents.
“How long?””
“Before you met Ryan.””
The room became silent.
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?””
Michael looked at her carefully.
“It means their business relationship existed before your relationship with Ryan began.””
Emily stared at the papers.
That fact alone wasn’t shocking.
People had business partners.
Friends.
Connections.
But something about it bothered her.
“Why does that matter?””
Michael pointed to a date.
“Because the company they created was registered three months before Ryan met you.””
Emily frowned.
“So?””
“So the company’s first major financial activity happened shortly after Ryan started dating you.””
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“You think Emily was connected to the plan?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
“I think we need more information.””
Emily looked away.
Because she already understood what he was saying.
She wasn’t just someone Ryan married.
She might have been part of something he had planned.
Even if she never knew.
That afternoon, Emily went through old messages.
She hated doing it.
Every photo.
Every conversation.
Every memory.
It felt like reopening a wound.
But she needed to know.
She searched Ryan’s name.
Years of messages appeared.
Normal messages.
Romantic messages.
Messages from a man who seemed completely devoted.
*I can’t believe I found you.*
*You make me want to be a better person.*
*I’ve never felt this way before.*
Emily stared at the screen.
Those words had once made her happy.
Now they felt unfamiliar.
Then she found something.
A conversation with Daniel.
From the week before Ryan proposed.
Her heart started beating faster.
She opened it.
The messages were short.
Daniel:
*Are you sure this is the right move?*
Ryan:
*It has to be.*
Daniel:
*She seems like a good person.*
Ryan:
*That’s why it will work.*
Emily froze.
Her fingers went cold.
She read it again.
Then again.
Because her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.
That message didn’t prove everything.
But it changed something.
She wasn’t looking at a marriage that slowly went wrong.
She was looking at a possibility that it had started wrong.
That evening, Ryan appeared outside the house.
Not inside.
Not forcing his way in.
Just standing near the front gate.
Emily saw him through the window.
Arthur immediately noticed.
“I’ll handle it.””
“No.””
Emily stopped him.
Arthur looked surprised.
“Emily.””
“I need to do this.””
She walked outside.
Ryan stood several feet away.
For once, he looked different.
Not powerful.
Not angry.
Tired.
“Why are you here?””
Ryan looked at the house.
“Our house.””
Emily’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.””
He looked back at her.
“You really think I never loved you?””
The question caught her off guard.
Because she had asked herself the same thing.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
Ryan nodded slowly.
“I understand.””
“No, you don’t.””
Emily stepped closer.
“You don’t get to say that.””
Ryan looked down.
“You found the documents.””
“Yes.””
“You found the money.””
“Yes.””
“You found Daniel.””
Her expression changed.
“How did you know?””
Ryan ignored the question.
“You think those things explain everything.””
“They explain enough.””
“No.””
His voice became more serious.
“They explain what I did.””
Emily stared at him.
“And?””
Ryan looked at her.
“They don’t explain why.””
She felt anger rising.
“Do you hear yourself?””
“I’m telling you there is more.””
“More excuses?””
“No.””
For the first time, Ryan sounded desperate.
“The truth.””
Emily laughed bitterly.
“The truth from you?””
“Yes.””
“Why should I believe you?””
Ryan had no immediate answer.
Then he said something she didn’t expect.
“Because the truth will hurt me too.””
The words made her pause.
Ryan looked toward the house.
“I didn’t meet you by accident.””
Emily felt her chest tighten.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan looked back at her.
“It means Daniel knew who you were before I did.””
The world seemed to slow.
Emily stared.
“What?””
Ryan continued.
“Your family. Your father. Your financial background.””
“Stop.””
“I’m not finished.””
She wanted to walk away.
But she couldn’t.
Because every instinct told her something important was coming.
Ryan lowered his voice.
“When I met you, I already knew your family had money.””
Emily felt sick.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
The confidence in his voice disappeared.
Now there was only bitterness.
“I was introduced to you for a reason.””
“By Daniel?””
Ryan nodded.
Emily took a step back.
“No.””
“He thought marrying you would open doors.””
“No.””
“He was right.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“So everything was a plan?””
Ryan looked away.
“That’s not the whole story.””
“Then what is?””
Ryan looked at her.
“I started with the wrong reasons.””
A painful silence followed.
“But then I fell in love with you.””
Emily shook her head.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like you’re trying to make yourself the victim.””
Ryan’s face changed.
Because maybe that was exactly what he had always done.
But this time, Emily saw something else.
Regret.
Real or fake, she couldn’t tell.
“I did love you.””
She stared at him.
“But I was already trapped by the person I was before I met you.””
Emily whispered:
“That’s not an excuse.””
“I know.””
The answer surprised her.
Ryan continued.
“I know I hurt you.””
“Then why?””
His eyes met hers.
“Because somewhere along the way, I stopped being afraid of losing you.””
A pause.
“And started believing I owned you.””
Emily felt tears forming.
Not because she forgave him.
Because she finally heard him admit what she had felt for years.
The truth.
That night, Emily sat with Arthur and showed him the messages.
He read them silently.
When he finished, he placed the phone down.
“I’m sorry.””
Emily looked at him.
“For what?””
“For not knowing.””
She shook her head.
“You tried.””
“But I didn’t see everything.””
Neither of them spoke.
Then Arthur said:
“There’s something we need to find out.””
“What?””
“The real reason Ryan chose you.””
Emily looked toward the dark window.
Because now the question had changed.
She was no longer asking:
Why did Ryan betray me?
She was asking:
Why was I chosen?
And somewhere in the middle of that answer was a truth Ryan had hidden for years.
A truth that connected her marriage, her father’s company, and the secrets buried beneath everything she thought she knew.
The beautiful beginning of her love story had not been a coincidence.
May you like
It had been carefully arranged.
And Emily was finally ready to discover who had written the first chapter.
