Chapter 9: The Partner

Marcus ended the call with Daniel only after David convinced him not to ask more questions.

The driveway had become too exposed.

Too chaotic.

Too many people knew too much.

David insisted everyone move inside.

Peter came reluctantly.

Monica refused at first.

Marcus looked at her.

“You can stand outside if you want. But Olivia is staying inside.””

Monica looked at her daughter.

Olivia walked past her without speaking.

That settled it.

Monica followed.

The living room looked almost ordinary again.

Except for the forged deed on the coffee table.

The USB.

The trust documents.

The court petition.

And the empty suitcase Marcus had carried upstairs.

David sat at the dining table.

“Tell me about Robert Hale.””

Marcus remained standing.

“Robert and I started Carter-Hale Logistics fourteen years ago.””

“How much does he own?””

“Forty percent.””

“You own sixty?””

“Yes.””

“Does he have authority over company accounts?””

“Some.””

Peter interrupted.

“More than some.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“Robert controls several credit facilities.””

“Since when?””

Peter hesitated.

“Last year.””

Marcus stared at him.

“I never approved that.””

“You signed resolutions.””

Marcus’s expression went cold.

“Did I?””

Peter looked away.

That was answer enough.

David wrote something down.

“So we may have additional forged corporate documents.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“How much of my life is real?””

Jasmine sat nearby.

That question hurt.

Because she understood it.

For the past year, she had wondered the same thing.

Which broken object was accidental?

Which smile from Olivia was fake?

Which promise from Monica had been a lie?

David asked, “Why would Robert finance Cumberland?””

Peter rubbed his face.

“Because he wanted Marcus under pressure.””

“For what?””

“His shares.””

Marcus stopped moving.

“My shares?””

Peter nodded.

“Robert has wanted control of Carter-Hale for years.””

“He never said that.””

“He wouldn't.””

Marcus shook his head.

“We've built that company together.””

Peter gave him a sad look.

“You built it together. That doesn't mean you wanted the same ending.””

David leaned forward.

“Walk us through it.””

Peter hesitated.

Then he seemed to make a decision.

“Last year, Robert approached me.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“He knew I had financial problems.””

“What problems?””

“Gambling debt.””

Peter looked ashamed.

“About ninety thousand.””

Marcus stared at his friend.

“You could have come to me.””

“I know.””

“You helped manage millions of dollars for me, and you were hiding gambling debt?””

“I was embarrassed.””

“So you stole instead?””

“At first, Robert offered a loan.””

David asked, “Personally?””

“Yes.””

“What did he want in return?””

“Information.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“What information?””

“Cash positions. Upcoming acquisitions. Debt structure.””

“You gave him confidential company information?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked away.

Peter continued.

“Then Monica contacted me about the house.””

Marcus turned back.

“How?””

“She knew I handled your finances. She asked whether the trust could prevent refinancing.””

“And you told her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because by then Robert owned me.””

Jasmine listened as the scheme took shape.

It had not started with one master plan.

It had started with weaknesses.

Peter’s debt.

Monica’s resentment.

Daniel’s need for money.

Robert’s ambition.

Then those weaknesses had connected.

And Jasmine’s inheritance had become something they believed they could use.

David asked, “Where does Southern Crest fit?””

“Daniel created it years ago for real estate deals. Robert suggested using it as an intermediary.””

“For what?””

“To move funds out of Carter-Hale without making direct payments obvious.””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“How much was taken from my company?””

Peter looked sick.

“Over eighteen months?””

“Yes.””

“About 1.4 million.””

Jasmine heard Olivia gasp.

Marcus didn't react at first.

He simply stared.

“One point four million dollars.””

“Some came back.””

“How much?””

“About four hundred thousand.””

“So a million is missing.””

Peter nodded.

“Approximately.””

Marcus walked toward the window.

For fourteen years he had built Carter-Hale.

He had missed school plays.

Birthdays.

Weekends.

He had told himself the sacrifices were for Jasmine.

For security.

For the future.

Now the same company had become part of a scheme threatening the home Renee left her.

Jasmine stood.

“Dad.””

He didn't turn.

She walked beside him.

“Look at me.””

He did.

“This isn't your fault.””

Marcus’s eyes filled with anger.

“I trusted every one of them.””

“That doesn't mean you caused what they did.””

Marcus looked toward Monica.

“It caused me not to see what was happening to you.””

“That part hurt.””

Jasmine did not lie.

“But you're seeing it now.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

Behind them, David asked Peter another question.

“What was supposed to happen after Friday’s loan?””

Peter swallowed.

“Cumberland would receive two million.””

“Then?””

“Part would cover existing obligations.””

“And the rest?””

“Robert wanted Marcus’s company pushed into a liquidity crisis.””

Marcus turned.

“How?””

“By calling certain credit lines.””

Marcus understood immediately.

“You were going to drain my reserves and call the debt simultaneously.””

Peter nodded.

“Then Robert would offer to buy your shares.””

“For pennies.””

“Yes.””

“And the house?””

“Backup collateral.””

Jasmine’s stomach turned.

Her mother’s home had been reduced to a backup plan.

David looked at Monica.

“And your reward?””

Monica remained silent.

Peter answered.

“Four hundred thousand.””

Olivia stared at her mother.

“You were going to get four hundred thousand dollars?””

Monica snapped, “It wasn't like that.””

“How was it?””

“I was trying to build something for us.””

“You were using my name on a stolen house!””

“I never intended for you to be hurt.””

“You made me hurt Jasmine!””

Monica flinched.

Olivia stood.

“You kept feeding me reasons to hate her because if we hated each other, we wouldn't compare stories.””

Monica said nothing.

That silence confirmed more than denial could have.

Jasmine stared at Olivia.

Olivia was right.

If the girls had trusted each other, they might have noticed sooner.

Olivia might have mentioned the strange papers Monica asked her to sign.

Jasmine might have mentioned the hidden recordings.

Instead, Monica kept them fighting.

David’s phone rang.

He answered.

After listening for several seconds, he stood.

“Thank you. Send everything.””

He ended the call.

Marcus asked, “What?””

“That was my contact at the lender.””

“The Friday loan?””

“Yes.””

“Can they stop it?””

“Already suspended.””

Marcus exhaled.

For the first time all night, something had actually been stopped before damage occurred.

David continued.

“The lender received an alert regarding disputed ownership and possible fraudulent authorization. They froze the transaction pending review.””

Jasmine closed her eyes.

Her mother’s half of the house was safe.

At least for tonight.

Marcus looked at her.

“One fire out.””

She nodded.

Then David’s expression became serious again.

“But there's something strange.””

Of course there was.

Marcus almost smiled at the absurdity.

“What?””

“The loan application lists a personal guarantor.””

“Me?””

“No.””

“Monica?””

“No.””

David looked at Olivia.

“Olivia.””

Olivia went white.

“What?””

Monica stood.

“That isn't possible.””

David stared at her.

“You didn't know?””

For once, Monica looked genuinely shocked.

“No.””

Peter stood too.

“Robert changed the structure.””

David nodded.

“Looks like it.””

Olivia’s voice trembled.

“What does personal guarantor mean?””

David chose his words carefully.

“It means the documents claim you agreed to become personally responsible for certain obligations.””

“But I'm sixteen.””

“Exactly.””

“So it doesn't count?””

“It creates major enforceability problems, but it also tells us someone was willing to put your name on significant debt.””

Olivia looked at her mother.

Monica shook her head.

“I didn't do that.””

“You put my name on the house.””

“That was different.””

Olivia laughed bitterly.

“Listen to yourself.””

Peter stepped closer to David’s laptop.

“Robert must have used the forms Monica collected.””

“What forms?””

“The ones Olivia signed.””

Olivia remembered.

The college savings account.

The papers with the house address.

Her face crumpled.

“He used my real signatures.””

David nodded.

“Possibly.””

Monica suddenly looked furious.

“Robert promised Olivia would be protected.””

Marcus stared at her.

There it was.

“You knew Robert was involved.””

Monica realized too late.

David asked, “How many conversations did you have with him?””

Monica said nothing.

Marcus shook his head.

“You're still lying.””

“I didn't know he would put debt in Olivia’s name.””

“But you knew he was financing the plan.””

Silence.

Olivia looked at her mother.

“You trusted a man stealing Dad’s company more than you trusted Marcus?””

Monica snapped, “Marcus was never going to give us control.””

Olivia stepped backward.

“Control.””

She finally understood.

It had never been about security.

It had been about control.

David’s laptop chimed.

An email arrived from Daniel.

Subject: RECORDS.

David opened it.

Scanned agreements.

Bank records.

Emails.

And the original letter from Renee’s attorney.

Marcus leaned over the screen.

The letter was dated almost nine years earlier.

Addressed directly to him.

It explained the trust.

The property interest.

Jasmine’s rights.

And one additional provision Marcus had not yet seen.

David read it twice.

“What?””

Marcus asked.

David looked at Jasmine.

“Renee added a protective clause.””

“What kind?””

“If anyone attempts to improperly transfer, encumber, or seize the trust’s property…”

He scrolled.

“…the trustee is authorized to immediately demand a full accounting of any person who exercised control over related assets.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean for us?””

“It means Jasmine’s trust may have broader rights to examine what happened here than Robert expected.””

Peter sat down heavily.

“He doesn't know about that clause.””

David looked at him.

“You're sure?””

“I've never seen it.””

“Would Monica have?””

Everyone looked at her.

Monica’s face suggested she hadn't.

David continued.

“If Robert built this transaction assuming Jasmine’s trust was passive, he made a serious mistake.””

Jasmine stared at the letter.

Her mother had anticipated pressure.

Not these exact people.

Not this exact scheme.

But pressure.

And she had built protections around her daughter years before anyone knew they would be needed.

Marcus whispered, “Renee was smarter than all of us.””

Jasmine almost smiled through her tears.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

Robert Hale.

Everyone went silent.

Marcus stared at the name.

David shook his head.

“Speaker.””

Marcus answered.

“Robert.””

His partner sounded calm.

“Marcus. I hear there's some confusion.””

Marcus looked at Peter.

“That's one word for it.””

“I think we should meet privately.””

“No.””

“Marcus, we've been partners fourteen years.””

“And apparently you've spent the last one trying to steal my company.””

Silence.

Then Robert sighed.

“Peter has always been weak.””

Peter flinched.

Marcus said, “You forged corporate resolutions.””

“Careful.””

“Is that a threat?””

“It's advice.””

David wrote something on a legal pad and slid it toward Marcus.

KEEP HIM TALKING.

Marcus nodded.

“Why Olivia?””

Robert paused.

“What about her?””

“You put a sixteen-year-old girl on a loan guarantee.””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“Interesting.””

Marcus looked at Monica.

“She seems to know.””

Monica shook her head desperately.

Robert's voice changed slightly.

“Monica is there?””

“Yes.””

Another pause.

Then Robert said, “Ask her where the missing five hundred thousand is.””

Monica froze.

Peter stared at her.

Marcus frowned.

“What five hundred thousand?””

Robert laughed softly.

“There it is.””

Monica stepped forward.

“Hang up.””

Marcus moved away from her.

Robert continued.

“Peter thinks 1.4 million left the company.””

Peter stared at the phone.

“It did.””

“No, Peter. One point nine million left.””

The room went completely silent.

Marcus looked at Peter.

Peter shook his head.

“No.””

Robert sounded almost amused.

“You really never checked the secondary account?””

Peter opened his laptop.

“What secondary account?””

Monica grabbed her purse.

Olivia blocked the doorway.

“Mom.””

“Move.””

“No.””

“Olivia!””

“Where is the money?””

Monica stared at her daughter.

Robert’s voice came through the phone.

“Ask Monica about the account in Georgia.””

Marcus turned toward his wife.

“What account?””

Monica said nothing.

Robert continued.

“She opened it eight months ago.””

David asked loudly, “Under what name?””

Robert answered.

“Not hers.””

Marcus felt dread settle in his chest.

“Whose?””

Robert paused.

Then said:

“Jasmine Carter.””

Every face in the room turned toward her.

Jasmine felt the blood drain from her face.

Marcus gripped the phone.

“What did you say?””

“The account holding roughly five hundred thousand dollars is in your daughter’s name.””

Jasmine shook her head.

“I don't have an account in Georgia.””

Robert laughed once.

“I know.””

Marcus stared at Monica.

And suddenly the false petition made even more sense.

The fabricated behavioral history.

The residential placement.

The attempt to have Monica appointed over Jasmine’s finances.

If money had been hidden under Jasmine’s identity, control of Jasmine meant control of the account.

David stood slowly.

“Monica.””

His voice was colder than Jasmine had heard all night.

“Did you open a bank account using Jasmine’s identity?””

Monica backed toward the wall.

Olivia stared at her mother.

Peter stopped typing.

Marcus ended the call with Robert.

No one moved.

Then Jasmine asked the question herself.

“Did you?””

Monica looked at her.

For once, there was no anger in her face.

Only fear.

And Jasmine knew the answer before Monica whispered it.

“Yes.””

Marcus shut his eyes.

Jasmine felt as though the floor had disappeared.

Her scholarship had been sabotaged.

Her belongings had been destroyed.

Her home had been targeted.

Her signature had been copied.

Her identity had been used.

And somehow, all of it connected.

David immediately opened a new page on his laptop.

“We freeze that account tonight.””

Monica suddenly shouted:

“You can't!””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why not?””

She covered her mouth.

Too late.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What happens if we freeze it?””

Monica shook her head.

“Nothing.””

“What did you do?””

“Nothing!””

Jasmine watched her.

Then she remembered something from the recording.

Six weeks is too long.

Accelerate it.

The girl can be out Wednesday.

But maybe the deadline had never only been the loan.

“Dad.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Jasmine looked at Monica.

“Ask her when the money moves.””

Monica went completely still.

David understood.

“When is the transfer scheduled?””

No answer.

Peter grabbed Monica’s abandoned folder from the table and searched through it.

Then he found a printed transaction instruction.

His face changed.

“Oh, God.””

Marcus grabbed the page.

A transfer was scheduled from the Georgia account.

Five hundred thousand dollars.

Destination: an offshore holding account.

Execution date:

Tomorrow.

10:30 A.M.

Jasmine stared at the time.

Then at the Hamilton email still open on her phone.

Her scholarship interview was scheduled for ten.

Marcus saw it too.

Everyone did.

Jasmine slowly looked at Monica.

“You scheduled it during my interview.””

Monica said nothing.

Jasmine’s voice became steadier.

“You deleted the first interview invitation.””

Silence.

“You tried to send me away before the second one could happen.””

Silence.

“And while I was supposed to be distracted or gone, you were going to move money hidden under my name.””

Marcus looked at David.

“Can we stop it?””

David was already dialing.

“Yes.””

Then his eyes moved to Jasmine.

“But tomorrow morning may decide more than the scholarship.””

Jasmine frowned.

“What do you mean?””

David pointed toward the trust documents.

“You turn eighteen in six weeks. Your mother left you rights these people have spent years trying to get around.””

He looked at the forged petition.

The bank records.

The attempted loan.

Then at Jasmine.

“And now you're the one person whose name connects almost every piece of their scheme.””

Jasmine looked around the room.

At Monica.

At Olivia.

At Peter.

At her father.

Hours earlier, she had come home believing she was being erased from the family.

Now she understood why.

May you like

They had not been trying to remove her because she was powerless.

They had been trying to remove her because she was the one person they could not afford to let discover how much power she actually had.
