Chapter 18: Eleanor's Last Confession

Charles stood in the doorway with his hands raised.

Richard held the gun steady.

Walter moved in front of Rebecca.

“Put it down.””

Richard laughed.

“You still think you can tell me what to do?””

“I think you've done enough.””

Charles looked at Walter.

“Listen to me. The trust isn't what Richard wants.””

Danny frowned.

“Then what does he want?””

Charles swallowed.

“The recording.””

Richard's expression darkened.

“Shut up.””

Charles continued.

“Eleanor recorded everything. The real evidence. Not the hospital video.

Not the bank statements. Everything.””

Walter stared.

“Where is it?””

Charles looked toward the safe.

“Inside.””

Richard smiled.

“Exactly.””

He gestured toward Danny.

“Open it.””

Danny shook his head.

“The fourth key belongs to Rebecca.””

Richard pressed the gun against Charles's chest.

“Then Rebecca opens it.””

Rebecca looked at Walter.

He gave her a small nod.

She walked toward the table.

Richard lowered the gun slightly.

“Good girl.””

Rebecca picked up the brass key.

But instead of inserting it into the lock, she turned toward Charles.

“Did you love my mother?””

Charles looked at her.

His expression softened.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let Richard raise me?””

Charles closed his eyes.

“Because I was a coward.””

Rebecca stared at him.

“You knew he was hurting people.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he had taken my brothers.””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing.””

Charles looked at her.

“I thought I could fix it later.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“People don't get their childhood back later.””

Richard shouted.

“Enough!””

He pointed the gun at Rebecca.

“Open the safe.””

The four keys turned together.

A heavy click echoed through the workshop.

Danny pulled the steel door open.

Inside were several envelopes, a small tape recorder, a leather-bound journal, and a sealed package.

Walter recognized Eleanor's handwriting on the first envelope.

For Walter.

His hands trembled.

Danny handed it to him.

Walter opened the letter.

My darling Walter,

If you're reading this, then the children have found one another.

I wanted to tell you everything. I tried more times than I can count.

I know you will wonder why I let Danny disappear. I know you will hate me for it.

But Richard had already shown me what he was capable of. He had control over the hospital, the police, and our money. Charles helped him hide the transfers. I was afraid that if I went to you, they would kill you.

I made terrible choices. I signed papers. I lied. I let our children believe they had been abandoned.

I cannot ask you to forgive me.

I can only ask you to find them.

Walter stopped reading.

His eyes filled.

Danny took the letter gently.

“There's more.””

Walter shook his head.

“Read it.””

Danny continued.

There is one thing I need you to understand.

Rebecca was never a mistake. Charles was her biological father, but you were the father I wanted her to know.

I asked Charles to protect her. He failed.

I asked Richard to leave our children alone. He refused.

And I asked Patricia to keep David safe.

Every child was hidden for a reason.

I only hope they will understand that I never stopped loving them.

Walter pressed the letter against his chest.

For twenty-four years, he had believed Eleanor had abandoned their family.

Now he understood that she had been trapped inside the same nightmare.

It didn't erase what she had done.

But it changed the shape of his grief.

Richard grabbed the tape recorder.

“Give it to me.””

Danny stepped forward.

“No.””

Richard raised the gun.

Walter moved between them.

“Richard, look at me.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“You're not the one I want.””

“Then take me.””

Danny shouted.

“Dad!””

Walter didn't move.

“You've spent your life taking children away from their parents. You want something from this family? Take it from me.””

Richard stared at him.

For a moment, something like uncertainty crossed his face.

Then he laughed.

“You think this is about revenge?””

He pointed the gun toward the safe.

“It's about money. The Hayes estate is worth millions. The trust controls the property, the company, and every account Eleanor protected.””

Charles shook his head.

“You don't understand the trust.””

Richard turned.

“What?””

“The original documents include a clause. If any beneficiary is threatened or coerced, the entire estate transfers to an independent foundation.””

Richard's face changed.

Charles continued.

“You cannot force them to sign.””

Richard stepped toward him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me spend all these years?””

Charles looked at Rebecca.

“I was trying to stop you.””

Richard struck him with the gun.

Charles fell against the table.

Patricia screamed.

Danny rushed forward.

Richard fired.

The bullet hit the metal cabinet beside Danny.

Everyone ducked.

Then the mill's main doors burst open.

Rhett and Caleb entered with several Iron Wolves behind them.

Richard turned.

The distraction gave David enough time to tackle him.

The gun skidded across the floor.

Danny kicked it away.

Rhett pinned Richard's arms while Caleb secured the weapon.

For the first time in decades, Richard Miller was no longer in control.

Police sirens approached.

Rhett had contacted a state investigator before entering the mill.

This time, the evidence would not disappear into Richard's department.

Charles sat against the wall, holding his injured arm.

Walter approached him.

“Why did you keep the recording?””

Charles looked up.

“Because Eleanor asked me to.””

“Why didn't you give it to me?””

“Because I was afraid Richard would destroy it.””

Walter stared at him.

“You let me believe my son was dead.””

Charles lowered his head.

“I know.””

“You let me sit in that diner every Sunday, ordering two breakfasts.””

Charles's eyes filled.

“I know.””

Walter's voice broke.

“Do you understand what that did to me?””

Charles nodded.

“I do.””

Walter stepped away.

“Then you understand why I can never forgive you.””

Later, at the state police station, an investigator played the recording.

Eleanor's voice filled the room.

She sounded tired, frightened, but determined.

“If this recording is being played, Richard has failed to stop the truth.””

There was a pause.

Then another voice spoke.

It was Charles.

“Eleanor, you don't have to do this.””

“Yes, I do.””

“You'll destroy all of us.””

“You destroyed us first.””

A chair scraped.

Then Eleanor continued.

“Walter never knew about the money. He never signed the real transfer documents. You used his signature while he was sedated. You stole from him, from Danny, from every child we had.””

Richard's voice followed.

“You're making a mistake.””

“No, Richard. My mistake was trusting you.””

Then came a sound that made Walter grip the edge of the table.

A baby crying.

Eleanor began to sob.

“That's David. He's alive. Patricia is taking him somewhere safe.””

Richard shouted.

“Give me the child!””

The recording ended with a door slamming.

Nobody spoke.

Then the investigator rewound the final seconds.

A faint voice could be heard behind Eleanor.

A woman.

She whispered a name.

Not Patricia.

Not Eleanor.

A name nobody in the room recognized.

The investigator increased the volume.

The woman said:

“Tell Walter that the baby he thinks he lost wasn't the only one.””

Walter slowly turned toward Danny.

Danny looked at the investigator.

“Play that again.””

The voice repeated.

“Tell Walter that the baby he thinks he lost wasn't the only one.””

The investigator stopped the recording.

Then he opened the sealed package from the safe.

Inside was a photograph of Eleanor holding a newborn baby.

On the back, in her handwriting, were six words:

*THE CHILD I COULD NEVER BRING HOME.*

May you like

And beneath those words was a name.

*SARAH HAYES.*
