Chapter 7: Vivian's Real Name

The footsteps stopped outside room 214.

Nobody moved.

Lily held the photograph against her chest. Rachel stood beside the desk, gripping the edge so tightly her knuckles had turned white.

I slipped the documents into the black metal box.

Then the door opened.

My father entered first.

Vivian followed him.

She wore a cream-colored coat, black trousers, and the same expensive perfume I remembered from my childhood.

At sixty-four, she looked almost exactly as she had when she married my father.

Her eyes moved across the room.

The open floor compartment.

The documents.

The photograph in Lily's hands.

Then she looked at me.

"Daniel," she said quietly.

"You shouldn't have come here.""

I laughed.

It wasn't because anything was funny.

"You really want to have that conversation?""

Robert closed the door behind them.

"Give me the box.""

"No.""

"Daniel, don't make this difficult.""

I stepped in front of it.

"Why did you tell Lily I was dead?""

Vivian's expression softened.

"I was trying to protect her.""

"From what? Her father?""

"From a family that would have destroyed her.""

Lily stepped forward.

"You told me my mother abandoned me.""

Vivian turned toward her.

"Lily, sweetheart, please sit down.""

"Don't call me that.""

Vivian blinked.

For the first time, her perfect composure slipped.

"I understand you're upset.""

"No, you don't. You told me my mother didn't want me.""

"I raised you.""

"You stole me!""

Lily's voice cracked.

Vivian looked toward Robert.

He stepped between them.

"Enough. This has gone too far.""

I pulled the birth certificate from the box.

"Then explain this.""

Robert barely glanced at it.

"That's an old document.""

"It says Laura is Lily's mother.""

"Biological paperwork doesn't tell the entire story.""

"And this?""

I held up the guardianship agreement.

"Your signature.""

He looked away.

"Your father was trying to protect you," Vivian said.

I turned toward her.

"Stop speaking for him.""

She took a breath.

"Daniel, there are things about your mother you don't understand.""

"Then explain them.""

Vivian looked at Robert.

He shook his head almost imperceptibly.

But she continued.

"Margaret was my mother.""

Silence.

The words seemed to drain all the air from the room.

Rachel shook her head.

"No.""

Vivian looked at her.

"Yes.""

"Mom never told us she had another daughter.""

"She wouldn't have.""

"Why?""

Vivian's expression hardened.

"Because she gave me away.""

I stared at her.

"You're saying Grandma Margaret was your biological mother?""

Vivian nodded.

"She was seventeen when she had me. Her family was wealthy, respected, and obsessed with appearances. An unmarried daughter having a child would have destroyed everything.""

"So they gave you away?""

"They arranged an adoption. I grew up believing my biological mother had died.""

Vivian looked at the photograph in Lily's hands.

"Then, when I was twenty-six, I discovered the truth.""

I felt a chill.

"How?""

"I found a letter in an old family archive. It contained Margaret's name, the adoption papers, and a photograph of a baby.""

She paused.

"I contacted her.""

"And she accepted you?""

Vivian laughed bitterly.

"At first, she cried. She held my hands and apologized. She said she'd spent her entire life wondering whether I was safe.""

Rachel looked horrified.

"Then why did you hate her?""

Vivian's eyes flashed.

"Because she had another family. She had you two. She had a husband who loved her.

She had a home. She had everything I had been denied.""

I stared at her.

"So you decided to destroy it?""

"I wanted what should have been mine.""

"By stealing my daughter?""

Vivian's face tightened.

"I didn't steal Lily.""

"Then explain why she's been calling you Mom.""

Robert suddenly interrupted.

"That's enough.""

Vivian turned toward him.

"No, Robert. I'm tired of protecting your version of the story.""

My father stepped closer.

"Think carefully about what you're saying.""

She looked at him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Vivian continued.

"Your father discovered my identity before I did.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"He found the adoption records. He knew I was Margaret's first child. He approached me before I ever met him.""

I turned toward Robert.

"Is that true?""

He said nothing.

Vivian nodded.

"He told me Margaret had abandoned me. He said she had chosen a comfortable life over her firstborn daughter.""

"That wasn't true," Rachel whispered.

"I know that now.""

Vivian's voice softened.

"But I didn't know it then.""

She looked at the photograph.

"When I finally met Margaret, she was frightened. She told me Robert had been hiding things. She said he had manipulated her finances, controlled her medical treatment, and threatened to expose private family secrets.""

I looked at my father.

"Why?""

Robert's jaw tightened.

"Because your mother was making terrible decisions.""

Vivian ignored him.

"Margaret wanted to leave. She wanted to expose him. But Robert convinced me that she was mentally unstable.

He showed me documents. Medical reports. Bank statements.""

"Forged documents?"" I asked.

"I don't know. Not at the time.""

She paused.

"Then he offered me something.""

"What?""

"Her place.""

Rachel gasped.

Vivian looked at me.

"He said if I helped him remove Margaret from the family, he would give me the life I had always wanted. A home. Money. A family name.""

I stared at her.

"You agreed?""

"Yes.""

The admission came without hesitation.

Robert stepped toward her.

"Vivian.""

She raised her hand.

"Don't.""

Then she looked at me.

"I thought Margaret would eventually understand. I thought she would accept that I deserved a place in the family.""

"You had a place," Rachel said.

"You were her daughter.""

Vivian's eyes filled.

"No. I was the daughter she had abandoned.""

"And what about us?"" I asked.

She looked at me.

"You were obstacles.""

The honesty was almost more disturbing than the lies.

Lily moved toward the door.

"I'm leaving.""

Robert blocked her.

"You're not going anywhere.""

"Move.""

"You're confused.""

"I'm twenty years old. I can decide where I go.""

Robert reached for her arm.

I pushed him away.

"Don't touch her.""

His expression turned furious.

"You have no idea what you're interfering with.""

"Then tell me.""

He stared at me.

Then, unexpectedly, he smiled.

"You want the truth? Fine.""

He pointed toward Vivian.

"She wasn't the only person your mother was trying to protect.""

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

Robert's smile disappeared.

"Margaret had another child.""

I glanced at Vivian.

"She already told us that.""

"No," he said.

"She had another child after Vivian.""

Rachel went pale.

I felt the room tilt.

"Who?""

My father looked directly at Lily.

"Your grandmother didn't disappear because she wanted to escape me.""

He paused.

"She disappeared because she discovered what Vivian had done to the baby.""

Vivian suddenly lunged toward him.

"Robert, shut up!""

But he stepped away.

And then he said the words that changed everything.

"Margaret's second daughter wasn't adopted.""

May you like

He looked at Vivian.

"She was murdered.""
