Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
For several seconds, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
Because the man standing twenty feet away from me was impossible.
A ghost from a life I thought I understood.
A person whose death had been confirmed.
A person whose name had been spoken in the past tense for eight years.
Rachel.
Lily.
The accident.
The lies.
Everything had been built around people who were gone.
And now one of them was standing in front of me.
Alive.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakably him.
"James?""
The name left my mouth before I could stop it.
The man looked at me.
His expression was full of pain.
"Hello, Daniel.""
Eric stepped in front of me immediately.
"Stay back.""
James looked at him.
"You still think you're protecting people.""
Eric's face hardened.
"You should be dead.""
James gave a small, bitter smile.
"That's what everyone needed to believe.""
My mother covered her mouth.
"James...""
He looked at her.
"Don't.""
The single word carried years of anger.
I stared between them.
My mother knew him.
Eric knew him.
Everyone knew him.
Except me.
I felt like the only person in the world who had never been allowed to know the truth.
"Who are you?""
James looked at me.
"You already know.""
"No.""
My voice shook.
"I know the name.""
I stepped forward.
"But I don't know anything anymore.""
He looked down.
"My name is James Whitmore.""
The name hit me.
I had heard it before.
Not recently.
Years ago.
In my father's old documents.
In conversations that stopped whenever I entered the room.
"You're Rachel's father.""
Silence.
James nodded.
"Yes.""
My chest tightened.
"You're supposed to be dead.""
"I know.""
"Why?""
His eyes moved toward the metal box in my hand.
"Because that's what I wanted everyone to believe.""
I laughed once.
A hollow sound.
"Of course.""
I shook my head.
"Of course you did.""
James looked hurt.
"You have every right to hate me.""
"Do I?""
I stepped closer.
"Do I even know enough to hate anyone?""
Nobody answered.
I pointed at him.
"Rachel spent eight years making me believe she was gone.""
My voice rose.
"Victor spent years hunting my daughter.""
"Melissa lied to me.""
"My mother lied to me.""
"Eric lied to me.""
I looked around.
"And now you appear out of nowhere.""
I stared at James.
"Tell me why I shouldn't believe you're another person trying to control me.""
James nodded slowly.
"You shouldn't.""
That answer surprised me.
"What?""
"You shouldn't trust me.""
He looked at the box.
"Not yet.""
Eric narrowed his eyes.
"Why are you here?""
James ignored him.
He looked at me.
"Because Rachel left instructions.""
I froze.
"Instructions?""
"Yes.""
"For who?""
"You.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
James reached into his coat.
Eric immediately moved.
"Don't.""
James stopped.
Then slowly pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"Rachel wrote this.""
He held it toward me.
I didn't take it.
"How do I know?""
"You don't.""
The honesty was frustrating.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
James looked at me.
"Because Rachel understood something.""
"What?""
"That once the truth came out, nobody would know who to trust.""
I stared at him.
"Then why should I trust anything you say?""
"You shouldn't.""
Again.
That answer bothered me.
Because liars always tried to convince you.
James didn't.
He looked like someone who had already accepted my hatred.
I took the paper.
Rachel's handwriting.
Again.
My hands shook.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then my father found you.
That means everything has gone further than I feared.
Please listen carefully.
My father is not the enemy.
But he is not innocent either.
I stopped.
I looked at James.
He lowered his eyes.
I continued.
He made choices that hurt people.
He trusted the wrong people.
He believed he could control dangerous men.
He was wrong.
My eyes moved faster.
Victor was never the beginning.
He was only a piece.
The real danger is the organization behind him.
Organization.
Another word.
Another layer.
Daniel, you need to understand why Lily matters.
It is not because of money.
It is because she is proof.
Proof of what happened.
Proof of what they did.
Proof of what your father discovered.
I looked up.
"What did my father discover?""
James answered quietly.
"The truth about the trust.""
I lowered the letter.
"Explain.""
He took a breath.
"Rachel's father's company wasn't just hiding money.""
"What was it hiding?""
"People.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"Identities.""
The words made no sense.
James continued.
"Years ago, powerful people used the company to move money and hide ownership.""
"Ownership of what?""
"Everything.""
He looked at Eric.
"Businesses. Properties. Accounts.""
Then back at me.
"People who wanted to disappear.""
I shook my head.
"And Lily?""
"Rachel found out the trust wasn't just a financial account.""
"What was it?""
"A vault.""
I stared.
"A vault?""
"Yes.""
"What was inside?""
James looked at the box.
"Evidence.""
My fingers tightened.
"The records.""
"Yes.""
"And my father found them.""
James nodded.
"He did.""
"Then why did Rachel hide Lily?""
"Because after your father discovered the truth, he tried to expose them.""
"And they killed him.""
My mother closed her eyes.
James didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
I felt something inside me collapse.
My father.
The man who taught me honesty.
The man I had spent years missing.
He wasn't just unlucky.
He was a target.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
James looked at me.
"Because Rachel begged me not to.""
"Everyone uses her name.""
His face tightened.
"Because she mattered.""
"She mattered to everyone except me.""
The words came out before I could stop them.
James looked away.
For a moment, I saw pain on his face.
"I know.""
I turned.
"Stop.""
He looked at me.
"Stop saying that.""
I stepped closer.
"You don't know what it feels like to have your entire life rewritten by people who thought they were helping.""
Nobody spoke.
Then James quietly said,
"You are right.""
I waited.
"I don't know what it feels like.""
He looked down.
"But I know what it feels like to lose a daughter.""
The words stopped me.
He looked toward the ground.
"I lost Rachel.""
His voice cracked.
"And I spent eight years pretending I was dead because I was trying to keep her daughter alive.""
I looked at him.
"What do you mean?""
James looked toward Lily's name on the letter.
"Rachel didn't trust Victor.""
"We know.""
"No.""
His eyes met mine.
"She didn't trust Victor because Victor was scared of someone else.""
The room went quiet.
"Who?""
James looked at the metal box.
"The person who created Victor.""
Eric whispered,
"No.""
James looked at him.
"Yes.""
Eric shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
I looked between them.
"What?""
James said,
"The person controlling this entire situation is someone close.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
James didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Someone who knew Rachel.""
"Someone who knew your father.""
"Someone who knew Lily existed before anyone else.""
I felt cold.
"Who?""
James looked at my mother.
And my mother stepped backward.
"No.""
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
"No, James.""
My heart started pounding.
"Mom?""
She looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
"Daniel, don't listen.""
James sighed.
"I didn't want it to come to this.""
I stared at my mother.
"What does he mean?""
She didn't answer.
"Mom.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was trying to protect you.""
The sentence.
Again.
The same sentence everyone used.
I closed my eyes.
"Who are you protecting me from?""
She looked away.
And that was when I knew.
The answer was worse than I imagined.
"Mom.""
She whispered,
"Your uncle.""
I froze.
"My uncle?""
James nodded.
"Your father's brother.""
I felt dizzy.
"My uncle died years ago.""
My mother said nothing.
James looked at me.
"That's what you were told.""
I stepped back.
"No.""
James continued.
"Your uncle was one of the people who helped create the system your father discovered.""
"My uncle?""
I couldn't process it.
"My family?""
James nodded.
"Yes.""
I looked at my mother.
"How long have you known?""
She cried.
"Since before your father died.""
My voice disappeared.
Then came back.
"Before?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"You knew my uncle was involved?""
"Yes.""
"And you said nothing?""
"I was afraid.""
"Of him?""
She nodded.
"Of what he could do.""
I laughed bitterly.
"So everyone was afraid.""
Nobody spoke.
"Everyone knew.""
I looked at Eric.
"Rachel knew.""
He nodded.
"My father knew.""
James nodded.
"My mother knew.""
She looked down.
I turned back to James.
"Why show up now?""
He looked at the metal box.
"Because the locker was never the end.""
"What?""
"It was a trap.""
My heart dropped.
"What do you mean?""
James looked around.
"Victor wanted you to open it.""
"Why?""
"Because he knew what was inside.""
I looked at the box.
The documents.
The flash drive.
The photographs.
"What is it?""
James stepped closer.
"Something Rachel hid from everyone.""
He reached toward the box.
I pulled it back.
"What?""
James looked at me.
"The final DNA test.""
My stomach dropped.
"We already know.""
"No.""
James shook his head.
"You know the one Melissa performed.""
He pointed at the box.
"The one Rachel kept is different.""
I stared.
"What does it say?""
James looked directly at me.
"It says Lily is not Victor's daughter.""
I froze.
"What?""
Eric stepped forward.
"Then whose is she?""
James looked at me.
The silence lasted too long.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
"She's yours.""
I stared.
"What?""
"Daniel.""
James's voice softened.
"Rachel never doubted it.""
"But the tests.""
"The tests were manipulated.""
"By who?""
James looked toward the darkness behind us.
Before he could answer, the lights in the station went out.
Total darkness.
Someone moved.
A gunshot exploded through the hallway.
I heard Eric shout.
I heard my mother scream.
I dropped to the ground.
The metal box slipped from my hand.
Then a voice echoed through the darkness.
A voice I recognized.
A voice I never expected to hear here.
"Everyone keeps looking for the truth.""
The voice laughed.
"But nobody asks the right question.""
The lights flickered back on.
And standing at the end of the hallway was Victor.
But he wasn't alone.
Beside him stood another person.
Someone holding the missing documents.
Someone I had trusted.
Someone who had been with me through the entire nightmare.
Melissa.
I couldn't speak.
Victor smiled.
"Daniel.""
He looked at Melissa.
"Tell him.""
She looked at me.
Her face was covered in tears.
"I didn't want you to find out this way.""
I stared at her.
"What did you do?""
She whispered,
"The second DNA test wasn't changed.""
My heart stopped.
"It was real.""
I felt the world tilt.
Melissa looked at Lily's picture inside the box.
Then back at me.
"And the person who ordered it...""
May you like
She swallowed.
"...was Rachel.""
