Calm

Chapter 7

I didn’t leave the house that morning.

Not because I wanted to stay.

Because I needed to understand exactly what Daniel had done before I took another step.

“Show me everything.”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I don’t have everything here.”

“Then get it.”

“Sarah—”

“Now.”

For once, he obeyed.

He went into his office.

Ten minutes later, he returned with a laptop, two folders, and a small black notebook.

Ethan sat at the kitchen table beside me.

I almost told him to leave.

Then I realized adults had been deciding what Ethan was allowed to know his entire life.

I wasn’t going to continue that pattern.

“You can stay,” I said.

He nodded.

Daniel opened the laptop.

The account had been created in my name eight years earlier.

Three months before our wedding.

I stared at the date.

“You did this before we were married.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“You gave me information for the mortgage application.”

My stomach twisted.

Social Security number.

Employment history.

Copies of identification.

Everything he needed.

“You forged my signature.”

Daniel nodded.

Ethan whispered, “Dad.”

Daniel couldn’t look at him.

The records showed fifty thousand dollars deposited.

Over the next eighteen months, the money moved through several investments.

Then withdrawals began.

Five thousand.

Eight thousand.

Twelve thousand.

The balance dropped.

Eventually it disappeared.

“What did you use it for?”

“Debt.”

“Gambling?”

“Mostly.”

I stared at him.

“Mostly?”

“Some household expenses.”

My chest tightened.

“Did you use stolen money to pay for our wedding?”

Silence.

“Daniel.”

“Some.”

I pushed my chair away from the table.

I couldn’t breathe.

Our wedding.

Our honeymoon.

The beginning of our marriage.

All of it contaminated.

“How much?”

“I don’t remember.”

“You remember.”

“Maybe twelve thousand.”

I covered my face.

Ethan stood.

“Sarah?”

“I’m okay.”

I wasn’t.

I thought of Rebecca.

Living away from her son.

Paying attorneys.

Probably struggling financially.

While Daniel used money from her parents to marry me.

A wave of guilt hit me even though I hadn’t known.

“I need to tell Rebecca.”

Daniel looked up sharply.

“No.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“You can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because she’ll use it.”

“It’s her money.”

“Her parents gave it to us.”

“For a house.”

“We were married.”

“And you hid it.”

Daniel’s voice rose.

“If she goes to the police—”

I stood.

“If?”

“Sarah.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I know.”

“You put stolen money in my name.”

“It wasn’t stolen.”

“You hid it from her during a custody dispute.”

“It wasn’t related to custody.”

“You literally said you put it in my name in case there was a financial investigation.”

Daniel looked toward Ethan.

“This is getting twisted.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“By who?”

Daniel slammed the notebook shut.

“You think I’m proud of this?”

“No,” Ethan said. “I think you’re scared of getting caught.”

That silenced him.

My phone rang.

Rebecca.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel stood.

“Don’t answer.”

I answered.

“Hi.”

Her voice sounded careful.

“How’s Ethan?”

“He’s here.”

“Can I speak to him?”

I looked at Ethan.

He nodded.

I handed him the phone.

He walked into the living room.

Daniel immediately leaned toward me.

“Don’t tell her yet.”

“Why?”

“Give me twenty-four hours.”

“For what?”

“To get legal advice.”

I almost laughed.

“You’re worried about legal advice now?”

“I’m worried about you too.”

“No, you’re not.”

“Yes, I am.”

“You used my identity.”

“I never intended for you to be involved.”

“You involved me the day you opened an account in my name.”

“I can make this right.”

“How?”

He didn’t answer.

Exactly.

Ethan returned.

“She wants to meet me.”

Daniel looked at him.

“When?”

“Today.”

“No.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

Daniel corrected himself.

“I mean, I don’t think that’s a good idea while emotions are high.”

“That sounds like no with more words.”

“Ethan.”

“I’m going.”

“I want to come with you.”

That surprised everyone.

Ethan stared at his father.

“Why?”

“Because there are things your mother and I need to discuss.”

“No.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I wasn’t asking permission.”

Ethan looked at me.

“I want Sarah there.”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

I said, “Then I’ll go.”

“You’re inserting yourself into something that doesn’t concern you.”

I stared at him.

“You put Rebecca’s money in an account under my name. I think that makes me pretty involved.”

Ethan’s eyes widened.

He hadn’t heard that part clearly.

“Her money?”

I closed my eyes.

There was no undoing it now.

Daniel stared at me like I had betrayed him.

How absurd.

We met Rebecca at a quiet park.

Margaret came too.

Daniel insisted on following in his truck.

Nobody could stop him.

Rebecca was sitting at a picnic table when we arrived.

She stood when she saw Ethan.

He stopped several feet away.

For a moment, neither knew what to do.

Rebecca didn’t rush him.

That mattered.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hi.”

“You got taller.”

Ethan almost smiled.

“I guess.”

Daniel arrived behind us.

Rebecca’s expression changed.

“I didn’t invite you.”

“I’m his father.”

“And apparently that means you go anywhere he goes.”

“Don’t start.”

I stepped between the argument before it began.

“Rebecca, I need to tell you something.”

Daniel immediately said, “Sarah.”

I ignored him.

“Your parents’ money.”

Rebecca froze.

“What about it?”

“Daniel didn’t spend all of it on treatment.”

She stared at him.

“I knew that.”

“He put fifty thousand dollars into an investment account.”

Her eyes widened.

“In whose name?”

I swallowed.

“Mine.”

For a second, Rebecca didn’t react.

Then she laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“Of course he did.”

“I didn’t know.”

“I believe you.”

Those words hit me harder than accusation would have.

Daniel jumped in.

“The money was legally marital property.”

Rebecca turned on him.

“You told the court it had all been spent before our separation.”

Daniel went still.

I looked at him.

“You testified about it?”

Rebecca nodded.

“Under oath.”

The legal problem just became much bigger.

Daniel’s voice tightened.

“My attorney handled that.”

“You signed the affidavit,” Rebecca said.

Ethan looked overwhelmed.

“Can we stop talking about money?”

Everyone went silent.

He looked at Rebecca.

“I came because I want to know about you.”

Rebecca’s entire face softened.

“Okay.”

Daniel started to speak.

Ethan held up a hand.

“Dad, please.”

Daniel closed his mouth.

Rebecca and Ethan walked along the path.

I stayed behind with Daniel and Margaret.

For nearly forty minutes, they talked.

Sometimes Ethan asked questions.

Sometimes Rebecca answered.

Once he laughed.

It was a small laugh.

But I saw Daniel flinch.

That was when I understood one of the darkest parts of all this.

Daniel wasn’t only afraid Ethan would learn the truth.

He was afraid Ethan might enjoy knowing Rebecca.

Might love her.

Might realize there was room in his life for someone else.

Daniel leaned toward me.

“See?”

I frowned.

“She’s already getting what she wants.”

“What does she want?”

“My son.”

“He is her son too.”

Daniel stared at me.

“You sound like her.”

“No. I sound like someone who finally sees what you did.”

His face hardened.

“You think she’s innocent?”

“I don’t know.”

“She isn’t.”

“Then prove it without lying.”

He looked away.

An hour later, Ethan returned with Rebecca.

His eyes were red, but he seemed calmer.

Rebecca handed him something.

A tiny blue baby sock.

Ethan smiled awkwardly.

“You kept that?”

“I kept everything.”

Daniel scoffed.

Ethan turned.

“Don’t.”

Daniel stopped.

Rebecca looked at me.

“Can I talk to you privately?”

Daniel immediately said, “About what?”

Rebecca stared at him.

“Not you.”

We walked toward a bench.

She sat down.

“I need to show you something.”

She pulled out her phone.

On the screen was an email.

From Melissa.

Sent that morning.

The subject line said: You deserve to know.

I looked at Rebecca.

“You’re in contact with her?”

“She contacted me after I came to your house.”

“Why?”

“Apparently Daniel called her last night.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does she know?”

Rebecca opened the message.

It was long.

But one paragraph caught my eye.

Sarah was never supposed to discover the account. Daniel told me years ago that if anyone ever asked, he would say Sarah opened it because she wanted money hidden before the wedding. I told him that was insane. He said nobody would believe Rebecca over a married couple.

My hands went cold.

I read it again.

Daniel had a backup story.

If the account was discovered, he planned to blame me.

Not someday.

Not recently.

Years ago.

I looked across the park.

Daniel was standing beside Ethan.

Talking.

Gesturing.

Looking like an ordinary father.

Rebecca whispered, “There’s more.”

I scrolled.

Melissa claimed Daniel had been gambling since before Ethan was born.

She claimed the affair started because Daniel borrowed money from her, then lied about why he needed it.

She claimed he told her Rebecca was unstable and impossible to live with.

The same story he later told me.

Then came the last paragraph.

I stopped breathing.

There is something Sarah needs to know about why Daniel suddenly changed his mind about having another child with her. It had nothing to do with money or being satisfied with one child. He lied about that too.

I stared at Rebecca.

“What does she mean?”

“I don’t know.”

Across the park, Daniel looked toward us.

He saw the phone in my hand.

His face changed instantly.

He started walking toward us.

Fast.

I stood.

“What did you tell Melissa about me wanting a baby?”

Daniel stopped.

His expression told me he knew exactly what I had read.

“Sarah, not here.”

“What did you tell her?”

Ethan looked confused.

Margaret looked frightened.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“I was trying to spare you.”

A chill ran through me.

“Spare me from what?”

He looked at the ground.

Then at me.

Finally he said, “I had a vasectomy.”

Everything inside me went silent.

I stared at him.

“When?”

May you like

Daniel swallowed.

“Before we met.”
