Calm

Chapter 7

Camera lights turned midnight into daylight.

Reporters poured into the intersection.

Police officers tried pushing them back.

It was too late.

Daniel Whitmore’s face was already live.

Emma could hear anchors shouting questions.

“Daniel!”

“Where have you been?”

“Were you kidnapped?”

“Is that Lily?”

“Why are you in handcuffs?”

The officer holding Daniel looked toward his partner.

“What do we do?”

That question told Brooks everything.

“You uncuff him.”

The officer glared.

“Stay out of this.”

Brooks pointed toward the cameras.

“Your badge is being broadcast across the state. Choose carefully.”

The officer’s face changed.

Emma almost admired Brooks.

Daniel remained calm.

“You received a kidnapping complaint from Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

“Call state police.”

“We have jurisdiction.”

“Then call the FBI.”

The officer hesitated.

Daniel smiled.

“That’s what I thought.”

More sirens approached.

This time state troopers arrived.

Then an ambulance.

Then county deputies.

The scene became impossible for Victor to control.

Emma turned toward Lily.

She stood beside the truck, trembling.

Emma wrapped a blanket around her.

“You’re okay.”

Lily looked at Daniel.

“They’re taking him again.”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because too many people are watching now.”

Emma hoped she was right.

A state trooper captain pushed through the crowd.

“Who is Daniel Whitmore?”

Daniel raised his cuffed hands.

“Unfortunately, me.”

The captain stared.

Then looked at the local officers.

“Why is he restrained?”

“Kidnapping complaint.”

“From who?”

“Evelyn Whitmore.”

The captain looked at Lily.

The child immediately shouted.

“She locked me in a wall!”

Everything stopped.

Even the reporters went quiet for half a second.

Then chaos exploded.

Questions flew.

The captain knelt.

“Can you repeat that?”

Lily pointed at Daniel.

“My daddy was in the wall too. She tied him up.”

The local officer interrupted.

“Captain, the child may have been coached.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

Emma stepped forward.

“I found Lily.”

“Who are you?” the captain asked.

“Emma Carter. Catering staff.”

“Tell me what happened.”

Emma looked at the cameras.

Then at the local officers.

She understood the danger.

If she told the story publicly, nobody could erase it later.

So she spoke loudly.

“I heard pounding behind a painting inside the Whitmore mansion.”

Reporters moved closer.

“I pulled the painting away. Lily was tied inside a hidden passage.”

The captain’s face changed.

“Who was present?”

“Evelyn Whitmore.”

“And what did she do?”

“She told me to put the painting back.”

Gasps spread through the reporters.

The local officers looked increasingly nervous.

Emma continued.

“I refused. I found Daniel deeper inside the passage. He was restrained.”

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, Emma saw gratitude replace suspicion.

“And then?” the captain asked.

“Evelyn pulled a gun.”

“Did she fire?”

“Yes.”

Daniel lifted his injured shoulder.

The captain stood.

“Remove his cuffs.”

The local officer hesitated.

“Sir—”

“Now.”

The cuffs came off.

Lily ran to Daniel.

He held her with one arm.

The cameras captured everything.

Emma knew that image would be everywhere by morning.

The dead father.

The daughter he was accused of kidnapping.

Clinging to each other.

Victor couldn’t easily rewrite that.

The captain turned.

“Where is Evelyn Whitmore now?”

“At the mansion,” Emma answered.

Daniel shook his head.

“Maybe.”

Everyone looked at him.

“If Victor has warned her, she’ll run.”

The captain frowned.

“Victor Hale?”

Daniel nodded.

“He was involved.”

One reporter shouted.

“Victor Hale, the Hale Foundation chairman?”

“Yes.”

Cameras swung closer.

Brooks whispered to Emma, “That will ruin his morning.”

Daniel continued.

“The server in the truck contains evidence.”

The captain immediately ordered two troopers to secure it.

Emma looked at the clock.

11:58.

Two minutes.

Daniel saw it too.

He retrieved the encryption key from Lily.

“We need internet.”

One of the news vans had satellite connectivity.

A reporter volunteered instantly.

Of course she did.

Daniel plugged the server into their equipment.

The timer appeared.

00:01:31.

UPLOAD CONNECTION RESTORED.

Emma exhaled.

Then red text appeared.

REMOTE LOGIN DETECTED.

Daniel’s face went white.

“What?”

Brooks leaned closer.

“Someone’s inside the system.”

Files began disappearing.

Emma stared.

“They can delete it remotely?”

“They shouldn’t be able to.”

“Who?”

Daniel’s fingers moved quickly.

The remote user name appeared.

ADMIN-EW.

Evelyn Whitmore.

Lily whispered, “She knows the password?”

Daniel shook his head.

“She knows an old administrator account.”

00:01:04.

Files disappeared one after another.

Medical records.

Financial records.

Security footage.

Emma felt sick.

“Stop her.”

“I’m trying.”

The timer dropped.

00:00:42.

Daniel typed.

Access denied.

Again.

Denied.

Brooks said, “Pull the network cable.”

“If I pull it, the upload stops.”

“But she can’t delete more.”

“We need the release.”

“Then change permissions.”

Daniel tried.

00:00:27.

A folder vanished.

Then another.

The Mercer ledger remained.

Emma pointed.

“She hasn’t deleted that one.”

Daniel stared.

Of course.

Evelyn and Victor needed it.

That meant something inside that folder mattered more to them than avoiding prison.

00:00:18.

Daniel opened the ledger.

Hundreds of transactions.

Account numbers.

Names.

Then Emma saw one name.

Evelyn Whitmore.

Transfers totaling $86 million.

Another.

Victor Hale.

$211 million.

Another.

Commissioner Nathan Dorsey.

Emma blinked.

“Dorsey?”

Daniel looked.

Not her catering manager.

A police commissioner.

Same last name.

Then a fourth account.

M. Carter.

Emma’s heart stopped.

Carter.

Daniel didn’t notice.

The timer reached five.

Four.

Three.

The screen flashed.

UPLOAD COMPLETE.

Then went black.

Daniel stared.

“Did it send?”

No one breathed.

The screen restarted.

TRANSFER SUCCESSFUL.

Brooks cheered.

Reporters shouted.

Daniel shut his eyes.

Lily hugged him.

“It’s over?”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“I hope so.”

Emma couldn’t celebrate.

M. Carter.

She stared at the name in her mind.

Her father’s name had been Michael Carter.

He had died when she was sixteen.

Or so she had been told.

Emma stepped toward Daniel.

“The ledger.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“Show me the Carter account.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“Because my last name is Carter.”

He reopened the partial local copy.

Searched.

M. CARTER CONSULTING.

Emma’s stomach twisted.

“Open it.”

Payments appeared.

Hale Medical Holdings.

Whitmore Development.

Private security contracts.

Dates going back twelve years.

Daniel looked at Emma.

“Did your father work in security?”

Emma could barely speak.

“He was an accountant.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What was his first name?”

“Michael.”

Daniel leaned back.

“No.”

“What?”

“I knew Michael Carter.”

Emma stared.

“You knew my father?”

Daniel looked pale.

“He worked for Whitmore Development.”

“No, he didn’t.”

“Yes.”

“He worked for an accounting company downtown.”

“That company audited us.”

Emma felt the road tilt beneath her.

“My father died in a car accident.”

Daniel said nothing.

“Right?”

His silence terrified her.

“Daniel.”

He looked around at the cameras.

“Not here.”

Emma grabbed his arm.

“Tell me.”

“Your father came to me twelve years ago.”

Her heart hammered.

“With what?”

“Evidence.”

“What evidence?”

Daniel looked toward Victor’s financial records.

“The first proof that Victor Hale was stealing money.”

Emma couldn’t breathe.

“My father knew?”

“He found irregularities in our accounts.”

“And then he died.”

Daniel nodded.

Emma stepped back.

For years she had believed her father lost control on a wet road.

Her mother had fallen apart afterward.

Emma had quit college to help pay bills.

Everything in her life changed because of that crash.

Now Daniel was telling her Michael Carter had discovered Victor Hale’s crimes shortly before dying.

“Was it an accident?”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“I don’t know.”

Emma stared at him.

“That means no.”

“It means I don’t know.”

“You suspected?”

“I suspected enough that I should have investigated.”

“And you didn’t?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I was younger. Victor told me your father was stealing from the company.”

Emma laughed bitterly.

“And you believed him.”

“I believed the documents he showed me.”

“Forged?”

“Probably.”

Emma wanted to hit him.

Instead she turned away.

Lily reached for her hand.

Emma looked down.

The child’s face softened her anger just enough.

Daniel said, “Emma.”

She ignored him.

“Your father’s files may be why I finally discovered the larger network years later.”

She turned.

“What does that mean?”

“Some of the records he collected survived.”

“Where?”

Daniel looked at the server.

“Possibly in the archive we just released.”

Emma stared.

Then every reporter’s phone began buzzing.

One after another.

Alerts.

Emails.

Messages.

The release had reached the public.

A reporter looked at her screen.

“My God.”

Another shouted.

“Hale Foundation accounts.”

A third:

“Private detention facilities?”

Another:

“Medical experiments?”

Daniel’s face darkened.

Emma looked at him.

“You didn’t mention experiments.”

“I didn’t know.”

The reporter read.

“Unlicensed drug trials performed on involuntary subjects at facilities controlled by Hale subsidiaries.”

Brooks whispered, “That’s why they kept Daniel alive.”

Daniel looked sick.

“They weren’t only hiding me.”

A new alert appeared.

A journalist shouted:

“There are patient lists.”

Daniel rushed toward the screen.

Names filled it.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

People reported missing.

People declared dead.

People whose families had searched for years.

Lily grabbed Daniel’s hand.

“Daddy?”

Daniel couldn’t answer.

Emma’s eyes moved down the list.

Then stopped.

MICHAEL CARTER.

Status: TRANSFERRED.

Date: twelve years ago.

Not deceased.

Transferred.

Emma stopped breathing.

“No.”

Daniel saw the name.

Emma pointed at the screen.

“My father.”

The date was two days after his supposed car accident.

Her knees nearly gave out.

Brooks caught her.

Emma stared at Daniel.

“You said he died.”

“I thought he did.”

“He’s on the list.”

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Yes.”

Emma read the next column.

FACILITY 4.

Status field:

ACTIVE.

Her father had not died twelve years ago.

May you like

According to Victor Hale’s own records, Michael Carter was alive.

And somewhere, in a place called Facility 4, he had been kept hidden for more than a decade.
