Chapter 14: The Last Family Secret

They found Eleanor at the safe house just before sunset.

She was sitting at the kitchen table with Laura, helping Emily color a picture.

The little girl had drawn three motorcycles.

One large.

One medium.

One small.

And beneath them, she had written:

*MY DAD AND HIS BROTHERS.*

Bear stood in the doorway.

Eleanor looked up.

"Benjamin?""

He walked toward her.

"Mom, we need to talk.""

She immediately noticed his expression.

"What happened?""

Bear placed the three compass fragments on the table.

"We found Uncle Robert.""

Eleanor's face went pale.

"Robert is alive?""

"Yes.""

She looked toward the window.

"Then he told you.""

Bear nodded.

"He told us about Grandfather.""

Eleanor closed her eyes.

For a moment, the only sound was Emily coloring.

Then she whispered:

"I was hoping you'd never have to learn this.""

Bear pulled out a chair.

"Why did Grandfather want you dead?""

Eleanor looked at Laura.

"Could you take Emily into the other room?""

Laura nodded.

"Come on, sweetheart.""

Emily gathered her crayons.

Before leaving, she looked at Bear.

"Are you going somewhere?""

He smiled gently.

"Just taking care of some family business.""

She nodded.

"Tell Daddy I miss him.""

Michael, standing behind Bear, swallowed hard.

"I will.""

When the door closed, Eleanor began speaking.

"Your grandfather didn't simply build a criminal business. He built a family around it. Everyone had a role. Everyone was expected to obey.""

Bear listened.

"Your father was supposed to take over completely. But when he realized what the business had become, he wanted out.""

Michael crossed his arms.

"And Grandfather wouldn't allow it.""

Eleanor shook her head.

"He threatened us. He threatened the children. He said the family would stay together whether we wanted to or not.""

Thomas looked at her.

"Why did he take me?""

Eleanor reached across the table.

"Because he wanted another heir.""

Thomas stared.

"An heir to what?""

"The operation.""

Bear felt sick.

Eleanor continued.

"Your grandfather believed the eldest son was too emotional. Your father was too weak. Michael was too rebellious. And Benjamin...""

She looked at Bear.

"He believed you were the only one who could be controlled.""

Bear leaned back.

"Me?""

"He wanted you to inherit everything.""

Bear laughed without humor.

"I never knew.""

"That was the point.""

Michael stepped forward.

"Then why did Dad let him take Thomas?""

Eleanor's eyes filled.

"Your father didn't know Thomas had been taken until it was too late. By the time he discovered the truth, Franklin had already completed the adoption paperwork.""

Thomas rubbed his face.

"So I was a business arrangement.""

"No," Eleanor whispered.

"You were my son.""

She reached for his hand.

"And I have spent every day wishing I had been brave enough to stop them.""

Thomas looked down.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Then he gently squeezed her fingers.

"You're here now.""

Eleanor began crying.

Bear watched them.

Then he remembered Robert's warning.

"Mom, Grandfather wants us at the old farmhouse tonight.""

Eleanor immediately stood.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because he knows you found the compasses.""

"What does that mean?""

She walked toward a cupboard and removed an old photograph.

It showed the family standing outside the farmhouse.

Their grandfather stood in the center.

Their father beside him.

Eleanor held baby Bear.

Michael was a toddler.

And in the background, a young woman stood near the barn.

Bear studied the photograph.

"Who's that?""

Eleanor's face changed.

"Your grandfather's daughter.""

Michael frowned.

"Grandfather had a daughter?""

Eleanor nodded.

"Her name was Grace.""

"Where is she?""

Eleanor looked down.

"Dead.""

Bear studied the photograph.

"How?""

"She tried to expose the operation before your father did.""

Silence.

Eleanor continued.

"She disappeared when she was twenty-two. Your grandfather said she had run away. Years later, I found her belongings in the farmhouse.""

Bear felt a chill.

"Was she murdered?""

Eleanor nodded.

"I believe so.""

Thomas looked at the photograph.

"Then why would he want us there?""

Eleanor took a shaky breath.

"Because Grace left something behind.""

She walked toward the hallway.

"Come with me.""

In the bedroom, she opened a small wooden chest.

Inside were old letters, photographs, and a silver bracelet.

Bear picked up one of the letters.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

At the bottom was a signature.

*Grace Bennett.*

He began reading.

If anyone finds this, please understand that Father is not the man he pretends to be.

He has been using our family for years.

He told Robert that I died.

He told Mother I ran away.

He told Benjamin that I never existed.

Bear stopped.

"Grandfather told me Grace was a family friend.""

Michael stared.

"He told me she was a cousin.""

Thomas looked at Eleanor.

"He erased her.""

Eleanor nodded.

"He erased her from the family.""

Bear read the final paragraph.

I have hidden the original ledger beneath the place where Father buried the first compass.

If my brothers ever find it, they must know the truth.

Bear looked at the three compasses on the dresser.

"That's what he wants.""

Michael nodded.

"The farmhouse.""

Eleanor grabbed Bear's hand.

"Listen to me. Your grandfather doesn't want to apologize. He wants to know what you've found.""

Bear looked at her.

"Then we'll show him.""

She shook her head.

"He will use you against each other.""

Bear glanced at his brothers.

"Not this time.""

Thomas stepped forward.

"We're going together.""

Michael nodded.

"All three.""

Eleanor looked at them.

For the first time in years, she smiled.

"Your father would have been proud.""

Bear kissed her forehead.

Then he turned toward the door.

Outside, Duke was waiting beside his motorcycle.

He looked uncomfortable.

"Going somewhere?""

Bear nodded.

"Old farmhouse.""

Duke sighed.

"I figured.""

"You coming?""

Duke looked surprised.

"After everything?""

Bear studied him.

"You're going to have to earn back what you lost.""

Duke nodded.

"I know.""

Bear started his motorcycle.

"Then start by keeping my family alive.""

At 11:42 p.m., the three brothers arrived at the old farmhouse.

The building stood beneath a pale moon.

Its windows were dark.

The front door was open.

Inside, a single lamp illuminated the dining room.

A man sat at the head of the table.

His hair was white.

His back was straight.

His hands rested calmly on the polished wood.

Bear stopped in the doorway.

"Grandfather.""

The old man smiled.

"Benjamin.""

Then he looked at Michael.

"Michael. My favorite disappointment.""

Michael clenched his jaw.

Finally, the old man turned toward Thomas.

"And there he is. My missing heir.""

Thomas stepped forward.

"I'm not yours.""

The old man chuckled.

"Of course you are.""

He reached beneath the table and placed a small object on the wood.

A silver compass.

Older than the others.

Its back was engraved with one word.

*GRACE.*

Bear stared.

May you like

Their grandfather smiled.

"Before we discuss the ledger, I think you boys deserve to know what happened to your sister.""
