Chapter 11: The Price of a Family Secret

The hospital room had suddenly become a cage.

Sarah pulled Noah behind her.

Ava stood beside Daniel, clutching the old leather jacket.

The nurse who had entered moments earlier backed toward the wall.

“I didn't write that,” she whispered.

Daniel examined the message.

His face hardened.

“Thomas is here.””

Sarah looked toward the door.

“Call the police!””

The nurse reached for her phone.

But before she could dial, the lights went out.

Noah screamed.

Ava grabbed his hand.

“Don't move!””

A loud crash came from the corridor.

Then another.

Daniel moved toward the window.

“There's an emergency exit outside.””

Sarah shook her head.

“We're on the fourth floor!””

“There's a maintenance balcony.””

He pulled the curtain aside.

A narrow metal platform ran along the outside wall.

Ava stared at him.

“Dad's father, what are you doing?””

Daniel gave her a reassuring smile.

“Getting my grandchildren somewhere safe.””

He opened the window.

Cold air rushed into the room.

Sarah helped Noah onto the platform first.

Ava followed.

Daniel was about to climb out when the door handle began turning.

Someone was trying to unlock it.

Sarah looked at him.

“Daniel!””

“Go!””

He climbed onto the platform.

The door burst open.

Thomas stepped inside.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

Behind him stood two men in dark jackets.

“Daniel,” Thomas said quietly.

Daniel turned.

“Thomas.””

For a moment, the brothers stared at each other.

Then Thomas laughed.

“You should have stayed dead.””

Daniel stepped between him and the children.

“You should have stayed away from them.””

Thomas glanced toward the open window.

“Where are you going?””

“Somewhere you can't reach us.””

Thomas pulled a small remote from his pocket.

A sharp alarm sounded throughout the corridor.

Then he pointed toward the window.

“There's nowhere to go.””

Daniel looked at Sarah.

“Get them down!””

Sarah moved along the balcony toward the maintenance ladder.

Ava followed with Noah.

Behind them, Thomas grabbed Daniel's coat.

Daniel twisted away.

The two men struggled near the window.

Thomas was younger, but Daniel fought with the desperation of someone who had already lost twenty years of his life.

“Give me the ring!”” Thomas shouted.

Daniel struck his brother's wrist.

The silver ring fell onto the floor.

Thomas lunged for it.

Daniel shoved him backward.

Thomas crashed into the bedside cabinet.

Ava reached the ladder.

“Grandpa!””

Daniel looked toward her.

“Keep going!””

Sarah helped the children down.

By the time she reached the ground, police officers were entering the hospital from the main entrance.

Wolf's motorcycle roared into the parking lot.

He jumped off before the engine had fully stopped.

“Where are they?””

An officer pointed toward the side of the building.

Wolf ran.

He found Ava and Noah beside Sarah.

“Are you hurt?””

Ava shook her head.

“Grandpa's still up there!””

Wolf looked up.

He saw Daniel struggling with Thomas on the balcony.

Without hesitation, he grabbed the ladder.

“Stay with the police!””

He climbed.

Thomas had managed to pin Daniel against the railing.

“You ruined everything!”” he shouted.

Daniel struggled to breathe.

“You ruined your own life.””

Thomas tightened his grip.

“I deserved what Father left me!””

“You forged the will!””

“I was the oldest!””

“You were greedy.””

Thomas raised his fist.

Then a hand caught his shoulder.

Wolf.

“Get away from my father.””

Thomas turned.

For a split second, he looked genuinely frightened.

Then he tried to strike Wolf.

Wolf blocked the blow and shoved him away from Daniel.

Thomas stumbled.

His foot slipped near the edge.

He grabbed the railing.

Wolf caught his arm.

Thomas looked up.

“Help me!””

Wolf tightened his grip.

“Give me one reason.””

Thomas stared at him.

“I'm your uncle!””

Wolf looked into his eyes.

“And you're the man who made me bury my father.””

He pulled Thomas back onto the balcony.

Then he handed him to the officers coming through the window.

By dawn, the hospital had become a scene of flashing lights, police interviews, and security personnel.

Thomas was arrested for attempted abduction, threats, and possession of evidence linked to the earlier crimes.

Sarah and the children were moved to a protected location.

Daniel was taken for medical examination.

Wolf sat beside him in the waiting room.

Neither man spoke for several minutes.

Then Daniel looked at his son.

“You saved me.””

Wolf shook his head.

“You saved me first.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“You called me. You gave me a chance to know you were alive.””

Daniel looked down.

“I don't deserve that.””

Wolf leaned back.

“Maybe not.””

The old man nodded.

“I understand.””

“But I still want to know my father.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

Wolf reached over and squeezed his hand.

“Just don't disappear again.””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“I won't.””

At the police station, Detective Harris listened to Rebecca's recording.

Thomas's voice came through the speakers.

“Curtis, you need to understand something. Michael is becoming a problem.””

Curtis answered:

“He's my brother.””

Thomas laughed.

“Then you should know exactly where to hurt him.””

There was a pause.

Then Curtis spoke.

“What if he goes to the police?””

Thomas replied calmly.

“Then make sure he never gets there.””

The recording continued.

Thomas gave instructions about the forged documents, the storage unit, and the children.

Then came a sentence that made Harris stop the recording.

“Once Michael is gone, Sarah becomes the problem. If she disappears, the children will have nobody left to challenge the inheritance.””

Harris leaned back.

The evidence was damning.

But there was something else.

Rebecca had recorded a second conversation.

In it, Thomas mentioned a bank vault.

Vault B-17.

Harris immediately called Wolf.

“We found the location of the original documents.””

Wolf answered from the hospital.

“Where?””

“First National Bank. Downtown.””

Daniel, sitting beside him, heard the conversation.

His face changed.

“That's impossible.””

Wolf covered the phone.

“What?””

“Your grandfather's lawyer was supposed to have the key.””

“Who had it?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Your mother.””

Wolf went still.

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“She kept the original key after my disappearance. She told me she had given it to someone she trusted.””

“Who?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Michael.””

Wolf looked at the phone.

“Detective, we'll meet you there.””

At the bank, Harris waited beside a private security room.

Ava, Sarah, Noah, Wolf, and Daniel arrived shortly afterward.

Ava was holding the jacket.

Sarah looked exhausted, but she stood straighter than she had the night before.

Harris greeted them.

“We've obtained a warrant to open the vault.””

Daniel produced a small key.

“Your grandmother gave this to Michael.””

He handed it to the detective.

The bank manager escorted them downstairs.

A heavy steel door stood at the end of a corridor.

The manager entered a code.

Daniel inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside were several boxes.

The first contained property documents.

The second held old bank statements.

The third contained photographs.

And the fourth held a sealed envelope.

Wolf picked it up.

His name was written across the front.

*WILLIAM BENNETT.*

He opened it.

Inside was a letter from his mother.

My son,

If you are reading this, your father has finally come home.

There is something I kept from you because I was afraid.

The night Daniel disappeared, I received a telephone call from someone I trusted.

He told me Daniel had been killed.

I later discovered that the call came from inside our own house.

Wolf looked up.

Daniel's expression changed.

“Who called her?””

Wolf turned the page.

There was one final sentence.

The voice belonged to your brother.

Wolf stopped breathing.

He looked at Daniel.

“Brother?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I had another son.””

The room fell silent.

Ava stared at him.

“Another son?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“His name is Matthew.””

Wolf felt as though the floor had shifted beneath him.

He had grown up believing he was an only child.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother and I had him before you were born. He disappeared when he was six.””

“Disappeared?””

Daniel nodded.

“We thought he had been taken.””

Wolf looked at the letter again.

“Then why would he call my mother?””

Daniel's voice broke.

“Because Matthew was the one who told Thomas where I was hiding.””

Harris frowned.

“Do you know where he is now?””

Daniel slowly shook his head.

“No.””

Then he reached into the vault and picked up a small envelope.

Inside was a recent photograph.

A young man stood outside the bank.

He had dark hair, a scar above his eyebrow, and the same eyes as Wolf.

On the back, someone had written:

*MATTHEW BENNETT — CURRENT ADDRESS CONFIRMED.*

May you like

And beneath it was a date.

Three days earlier.
