The woman humiliated the old gardener and threw mud in his face… until he pulled out a document that could take the mansion away from her.

The morning sun illuminated the gardens of a huge mansion on the outskirts of the city.

The hedges were perfectly trimmed.

White roses grew around a stone fountain.

And in the middle of that garden, an elderly man named Arthur Miller was at work.

He was seventy-two years old.

He wore a worn gray shirt, old suspenders, and mud-caked boots.

Arthur had been tending the property for nearly thirty years.

He knew every tree.

Every path.

Every corner of the garden.

But that morning, everything was about to change.

A woman stormed out of the mansion.

Her name was Vanessa Whitmore.

She was thirty-four, wore an elegant white dress, and carried a handbag that likely cost more than several months of Arthur’s wages.

"You!" she shouted from the path.

Arthur slowly set down his tools.

"Good morning, Miss Whitmore."

"Good morning?"

Vanessa angrily pointed to a small patch of mud beside the lawn.

"Have you seen the state of this?"

Arthur looked down at the ground.

"The irrigation pipe burst this morning. I’m fixing it."

"Important guests are coming this afternoon."

"It will be taken care of before noon."

But Vanessa didn't want an explanation.

She wanted someone to blame.

Ever since moving into the mansion with her fiancé, Daniel, she had treated the staff as if they were invisible.

Arthur had endured her orders.

Her insults.

Even her threats to fire him.

That morning, however, Vanessa went too far.

"Thirty years working here, and you can't even keep a garden clean."

Arthur took a deep breath.

"Miss, I just need a little time."

Vanessa grabbed the bucket sitting next to him.

Inside was water mixed with dirt.

Arthur saw what she was about to do.

"Miss Whitmore, don't..."

Too late.

Vanessa flung the contents straight at him. Mud splattered the old man's face.

It landed on his white hair, his nose, his shirt, and his suspenders.

Arthur remained completely motionless.

Vanessa dropped the bucket.

"Maybe this way you'll learn to do your job properly."

For several seconds, the only sound was the water from the fountain.

Arthur slowly wiped his eyes.

He didn't shout.

He didn't hurl insults.

He didn't even raise his voice.

That seemed to infuriate Vanessa even more.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

Arthur replied calmly:

"Because I’ve been wondering for a long time how long it would take for you to show who you really are."

Vanessa let out a laugh.

"And who do you think you are?"

"The gardener."

"Exactly."

Vanessa pointed toward the entrance.

"So pack up your things and get off my property."

Arthur studied her for a few seconds.

"Your property?"

"Daniel and I are getting married in two months. This house will be ours."

Arthur lowered his gaze.

He slipped a hand into the pocket of his overalls.

"Then I think you should read this."

He pulled out a folded document.

Vanessa wouldn't even take it.

"I'm not interested."

Arthur unfolded it in front of her.

At the top, it read:

LEASE TERMINATION NOTICE.

Notice of lease termination.

The smile vanished from Vanessa's face.

"What is that?"

"Exactly what it looks like."

"Why do you have that document?"

Arthur looked up.

"Because this mansion doesn't belong to Daniel."

Vanessa froze.

"Of course it belongs to Daniel."

"No."

Arthur slowly shook his head.

"Daniel has been renting it for three years."

Vanessa let out a nervous laugh.

"That's absurd."

Arthur handed her the document.

She began to read.

The color drained from her face line by line.

The lease was in the name of a company she had never heard of.

Miller Estate Holdings. Vanessa slowly looked up.

"Miller..."

She looked back at the old man.

Arthur Miller.

"No..."

Arthur nodded.

"My wife and I bought this property thirty-eight years ago."

Vanessa opened her mouth, but no words came out.

Arthur continued:

"After she died, I couldn't bear living inside the house. Every room reminded me of her."

That was why he had decided to rent it out.

But there was one thing he never gave up.

The garden.

His wife had personally planted the first white roses by the fountain.

Arthur had kept tending to them even after leaving the mansion.

He never needed to tell the tenants he was the owner.

He preferred to introduce himself simply as the gardener.

"Daniel knows this," Vanessa whispered.

"Of course."

That answer was even worse.

Vanessa felt her stomach drop.

For months, she had boasted to her friends about her fiancé's "family mansion."

She had hosted parties.

She had talked about remodeling rooms.

She had even started planning their wedding in that very garden.

But none of it was his.

Then they heard footsteps behind them.

"Vanessa?"

It was Daniel.

May you like

He had come out of the mansion dressed in a dark suit.

Upon seeing the mud covering Arthur's face and clothes...
