The wealthy woman cared for a young stranger in the hospital… until she saw the necklace she was wearing and began to cry.

The room was silent when Sofia Miller opened her eyes.

The first thing she saw was a white ceiling.

Then she heard the steady sound of a machine beside her bed.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

She tried to move.

A sharp pain shot through her body.

"Slowly."

A woman's voice made Sofia turn her head.

An older woman was sitting beside her.

She looked to be in her sixties.

Her gray hair was perfectly styled, and she wore an elegant black suit. On her wrist was a watch that likely cost more than Sofia earned in a year.

"Where am I?" Sofia asked.

"At St. Matthew's Hospital."

Sofia tried to remember.

The rain.

A road.

Lights approaching.

Then...

Nothing.

"What happened?"

The woman picked up a glass of orange juice.

"You were in an accident."

She carefully brought the glass to Sofia's lips.

"Have a little."

Sofia took a small sip.

Her hands were trembling.

"Who are you?"

The woman remained silent for a few seconds.

"My name is Eleanor Whitmore."

Sofia recognized that surname.

Everyone in the city knew it.

The Whitmore family owned hotels, buildings, and various companies.

"Why are you here?"

Eleanor lowered her gaze.

"Because I was the one who found you."

That night, Eleanor was returning from a charity dinner when her driver spotted someone lying by the side of the road.

Other vehicles had driven right past.

Eleanor ordered the car to stop.

They found Sofia unconscious in the rain.

She had no phone.

She carried no identification.

Just a small backpack.

Eleanor called emergency services and stayed with her until the ambulance arrived.

Then she accompanied her to the hospital.

"You didn't have to stay," Sofia whispered.

"I know."

"Then why did you?"

Eleanor looked at her. “Because no one should wake up alone after something like that.”

Sofia looked away.

Those words hurt more than she’d expected.

Because being alone was something she was used to.

She had grown up without a father.

Her mother had died when she was eleven.

Since then, she had bounced from one foster home to another.

When she turned eighteen, she left the system with a backpack, a few dollars, and no family waiting for her.

Now she was twenty-four.

She worked at a laundromat during the day and cleaned offices some nights.

Eleanor knew nothing about that.

Not yet.

“Is there anyone we can call?” she asked.

Sofia shook her head.

“No.”

“Family?”

“I don’t have any.”

Eleanor fell silent.

“No one?”

Sofia gave a sad smile.

“I’m used to it.”

She tried to sit up then.

The pain made her groan.

Eleanor stood up immediately.

“No, no. Stay still.”

She placed a hand behind Sofia’s neck.

With her other hand, she brought the glass back to her lips.

“Drink.”

Sofia obeyed.

Then she started to cry.

She tried to hide it.

“I’m sorry.”

“What are you apologizing for?”

“I don’t like being seen like this.”

Eleanor gently stroked her face.

“You don’t have to be strong all the time.”

And that was when she saw it.

Sofia’s T-shirt had shifted slightly.

A thin silver chain appeared around her neck.

A small oval locket hung from it.

Eleanor froze.

The glass trembled in her fingers.

“Where did you get that?”

Sofia looked down.

“This?”

She touched the locket.

“It was my mother’s.”

All the color drained from Eleanor’s face.

“What was your mother’s name?”

Sofia frowned.

“Rebecca Miller.”

The glass nearly slipped from Eleanor’s hands. Sofia was alarmed.

"Are you all right?"

But Eleanor didn't seem to hear her.

"Rebecca..."

She repeated the name as if she hadn't dared to say it aloud for decades.

"Did you know my mother?"

Eleanor slowly sat down.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

"Let me see the locket."

Sofia hesitated.

Then she handed it to her.

Eleanor held it between her fingers.

On the back, three small letters were engraved:

E.R.W.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"My God."

Sofia felt a surge of fear.

"What does that mean?"

The woman pressed a small catch on the side.

Click.

The locket sprang open.

Sofia stood motionless.

She had never known it could open.

Inside was a tiny photograph.

Two girls.

One looked to be about twelve years old.

The other, barely seven.

They were embracing.

Eleanor began to weep.

"That’s me."

Sofia looked at her.

"What?"

The woman pointed to the younger girl.

"And that was Rebecca."

Sofia felt her heart stop.

"No."

"Your mother was my sister."

Sofia immediately shook her head.

"My mother didn't have any family."

"That’s what she wanted you to believe."

Eleanor took a deep breath.

Thirty years ago, Rebecca Whitmore had been born into one of the city's wealthiest families.

But she hated the life her father had planned for her.

When she was nineteen, she fell in love with a young man named Michael Miller.

Her father felt Michael didn't belong in their world.

He forbade her from seeing him.

Rebecca chose to leave.

She gave up the Whitmore name.

She moved to a different city.

And be...
