The elderly man jumped onto the tracks to save a young girl… and minutes later, a man arrived in tears upon recognizing her.

The subway station was nearly full that night.

It was just past seven o'clock.

Trains were constantly pulling in and out as hundreds of people headed home after a long day of work.

Fluorescent lights illuminated the platforms.

The sound of announcements mingled with the noise of the trains and the chatter of passengers.

No one imagined that, in a matter of seconds, the place would become the scene of a tragedy that someone would remember for the rest of their life.

Near one end of the platform stood Samuel Miller, a sixty-seven-year-old man.

He was wearing an old blue work shirt, dark trousers, and worn-out boots.

He had worked as a subway maintenance technician for nearly thirty years.

That night, he was simply waiting for the train that would take him home.

Samuel was tired.

His wife had died three years earlier.

Since then, returning to an empty apartment had become one of the hardest parts of his life.

But he had learned to carry on.

Every night.

Every morning.

One day at a time.

While waiting for the train, he heard a child's voice.

"Mom!"

Samuel turned his head.

A girl of about eight was standing near the edge of the platform.

She was wearing a small pink backpack and a colorful coat.

She was looking desperately into the crowd.

"Mom!"

No one answered.

Samuel looked around.

There were too many people.

Some were looking at their phones.

Others were wearing headphones.

A woman was pushing a stroller.

A man was arguing on his phone.

The girl began to walk slowly forward.

"No, little one," Samuel murmured.

The girl had seen something on the other side.

Perhaps she thought she recognized her mother.

She took another step.

Then her foot slipped.

It all happened too fast.

The girl fell off the platform.

Her body disappeared over the edge.

A scream pierced the station.

"OH MY GOD!" Samuel saw the girl fall straight onto the tracks.

The train was approaching.

The lights appeared at the far end of the tunnel.

Samuel didn't think.

He didn't ask for permission.

He didn't wait for anyone else to react.

He dropped his bag.

He jumped.

"Sir, no!"

Someone shouted behind him.

Samuel landed on the tracks and ran toward the girl.

She was frozen.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't screaming.

She was simply staring at the approaching train lights.

Samuel reached her.

"Look at me!"

The girl lifted her head.

"Don't be afraid!"

"I'm scared!"

Samuel grabbed her.

"I know."

He lifted her into his arms.

"But you're going to be okay."

The train was getting closer and closer.

Samuel glanced quickly to the side.

He remembered the safety recess beneath the edge of the platform.

A small space.

Enough to hide in.

"Hold on tight!"

Samuel hugged the girl and threw himself into the side recess.

The train roared past them with a deafening crash.

The wind whipped against Samuel's face.

The girl closed her eyes.

Samuel shielded her with his entire body.

For several seconds, neither of them could hear anything but the metallic clatter of the train.

Then...

Silence.

The train had passed.

Samuel took a deep breath.

"Are you okay?"

The girl opened her eyes.

"Yes."

Samuel smiled.

"Good."

The girl began to cry.

Samuel hugged her.

"It's over now."

Up above, passengers were screaming.

Someone had called the police.

Another employee had halted service.

A few minutes later, several officers came running onto the platform.

Among them was Captain Daniel Harris.

"Where is the girl?!"

"Down here!" someone shouted.

Daniel looked down at the tracks.

He saw Samuel holding the little girl. "Get them out of there!"

Two employees helped the little girl first.

Samuel climbed up next.

As soon as his feet touched the platform, several people began speaking at once.

"It was incredible!"

"That man jumped without a second thought!"

"He could have died!"

Samuel was breathing heavily.

He looked at the girl.

"Where is your mother?"

The little girl started to cry again.

"I don't know."

Samuel crouched down.

"What's your name?"

The girl answered through her tears:

"Sophie."

"Sophie what?"

The little girl fell silent.

She looked confused.

"Sophie Miller."

Samuel froze.

"Miller?"

The girl nodded.

"Yes."

Samuel felt a strange shiver run through him.

But before he could ask anything else, Captain Harris approached.

"Sir, are you Samuel Miller?"

"Yes."

"Do you know this girl?"

Samuel shook his head.

"I've never seen her before."

The captain looked at the girl.

"Then why does she say her last name is Miller?"

Samuel had no answer either.

Then the girl looked at the old man.

"Because my dad's name is Samuel Miller."

The man stood completely motionless.

"What?"

The girl began to cry.

"My dad's name is Samuel."

Samuel felt his heart pounding against his chest.

"What's your mom's name?"

"Emily."

The old man's expression changed.

Emily.

That name belonged to his daughter.

But his daughter had died.

May you like

At least, that was what he believed.

Samuel had a daughter named Emily.
